Quote:
Inside Obama’s HQ

Frederick Harris is walking through his front gate in Washington, D.C., after a morning coffee, when he spots me on his front steps, staring at my mobile phone. “Are you Frederick?” I say. “Depends who’s asking,” he replies warily, as you do to a strange man loitering by your front door.

I want to reply “Barack Obama” – and I would only be half-wrong.

It had taken all of a few minutes to download the app designed by President Obama’s re-election campaign at my kitchen table and have it guide me to Harris’s house a few blocks away, in the Capitol Hill neighbourhood.

One tap on the app’s icon for voter canvassing and the screen lights up with a street map dotted with small blue flags, marking the Democrats in the area his re-election campaign would like to have door-knocked. Tap on the flag, and the app brings up their address. Another tap and I have their first names, their age and their gender, as in “Frederick H., 75, M.”

Since its launch this year, anyone can download the “Obama for America” app and see the party affiliation of many of their neighbours, with the ages and exact addresses thrown in for good measure.
Harris, who shares the house with his wife, seems nonplussed about any possible assault on his privacy and is happy to provide me with his full surname.

“If they are trying to identify sympathetic Democrats, they have got two in the cross hairs right here,” he says, of him and his wife. “Everything is an invasion of privacy these days. If I got excited about it, I would have had a coronary by now.”

Others are not so relaxed. At the home of 45-year-old “Deanne S.”, in the next block, the man who answers the door recoils as I try to show him his household’s details displayed on my mobile phone. “I am not sure she will talk to you,” he says, and shuts the door.

Article about DNC use of technology in the election, the bold is mine and the snippet I choose is the horrifying part to me.

That kind of information is out there for everyone, pretty much. The DNC is just using it.

They are pushing my information into someones GPS and providing enough demo info for that person to strike up a non casual conversation about myself, my beliefs and my family.

Yes. It's all out there on the internet. I bet most of the search gurus here could do the same thing without much trouble.

Yeah, I remember seeing interactive maps floating around four years ago that let you see even minor political donations. Found out my doctor gave money to the RNC, for example.

I can't believe no one else has a problem with this.

I don't have a problem with it because my info isn't in it and I don't support the DNC...I'd have a huge problem with it if it either were true ;)

What makes you think the app only contains registered democrats?

Nobody on this board values privacy rights. It's that simple.

It isn't a privacy issue.

Privacy means people can't invadde your home, computer, wallet, whatever to find out information about you. Information they can come up with because it's already available somewhere else is open season.

There is no right to have your information remain secret. There's a right to deny access to your own property, or to not answer questions. If people find out other ways... Well if you want to do anything about it you better hope they broke an agreement or the law. Otherwise, you're out of luck.

Regardless, this board values privacy just fine. It just doesn't extend to this.

God, that's awful.

If any candidate supporter showed up at my door with that app, I'd be sure not to vote for that candidate.

I don't see the big deal...I can google all of that information and then some about just about anyone...the app just may make it quicker. I can pull up at a house, get the house number off the mailbox or door, pull up reverse-address through the white pages to get names and ages and then google if I need more info than that.

Me either. It's still a **** thing to do. Really, you'd think they would want to not alienate people.

Guys as a result of a FOIA lawsuit years ago anyone can get any state's entire voter record for free from the state's office of voter affairs. I get updates to PA's every month in a SQL database.

Nothing to see here, move along. This like not being freaked out that your name and address is in a phonebook.

It's not a matter of me not having a problem with it. I just don't have a problem with it because of privacy rights (unless they gained the information through some invasive means). What I have a problem with is the obnoxious behavior.

Look, it's very simple.

When the one company made the app that scanned Facebook, FourSquare, and other social media sites for check-ins and tags and whatnot and allowed you to pinpoint people you designated as "friends" on your GPS-enhanced map on your phone... People were right to deem it a creepy application of public data to create a "Stalker App."

Similarly, this is a very insidious and abusive use of public voting information to collate it and put it readily in the hands of people with the implied encouragement to harass, accost, or solicit me based on the information. This is definitely not something an incumbent politician should be using his campaign's access to gov't resources to create and distribute.

I don't see that there's any abuse going on, regardless of how "creepy" the facebook/scan/app thing is. Presuming the information was obtained lawfully, the only reason a politician should not be doing it is because it's likely to piss you off and make you not vote for him. There's nothing wrong with either accosting or soliciting you provided they leave you alone once you tell them to. If you end up getting harrassed, call the police.

Before we go off talking past each other for 6 pages though, let me ask you this: Are you saying that this activity violates the law, or the Constitution? If so, under what legal theory, or court case? If there is a case out there that establishes this activity as unConstitutional, by all means present it. I'm unaware of it. Or are you saying that it's just generally slimy, intrusive, creepy behavior that you don't approve of? I can go along with that.

I make voter lists street by street for our volunteers all the time. Going door to door is rather basic campaign work.

Do you find Elmo's practice of going door to door and creating the same lists and information similarly "slimy, intrusive and creepy"?

Oh no I don't go door to door to create the lists. I have all the information in a SQL database that we created from the State's data. I give information out to our volunteers to go door to door so they have the demographic information they need.

As an example one makes street lists during the petition period in order to only knock on the doors of people in the party the candidate is registered to get the required signatures to be placed on the ballot. During the primary that list is narrowed to super-voters in the area, during the general it is focused on independents.

Think about it this way if you want to vote the government is going to need to know who you are and where you live at the very basics.

Now what would be interesting is if the app doesn't use just public info for voters but actually ties into the DNC voter database (I don't know the name but the RNC calls theirs "Voter Vault"). If you think general information on voters is intrusive and creepy wait till you see the several hundreds of columns of information markers the parties keeps on each voter. They are one of the biggest purchasers of aggregated data in the nation. What magazines do you subscribe to, what are your online habits, purchases, what store credit lines/cards do you have, what reward programs are you attached to, contributions to non profits?

Are you a Trader Joes shopping ACLU member with a subscription to the New Yorker...you're getting different Democratic literature than if you're an NRA member who gets groceries at Walmart and lives in coal country.
