For some reason I'm on a steam locomotive kick lately., ever since I found that old Wabash Cannonball video I posted 2 pages ago. My dad used to play that song for me just about every night when I was really little.

Anyhow, check out this video. I particularly like this one because it shows a modern diesel train passing UP 4449 as she's getting up steam. Respectful, like an F-22 in formation with a P-51. Check out the later parts too. There's a big freight train with 5 diesels pulling it; that's a bad, bad boy right there. Right after that is mighty Union Pacific number 3985, the last Challenger.

Some people don't like to see a diesel in the train with a steam loco, especially a really powerful one like #3985, but as I understand it the diesel is really there for additional braking and to help the steam loco up hard grades that in years past would have called for double-headers anyhow. When you see #3985 pass by, there is no doubt which engine is pulling that train! If a diesel can reduce the wear and tear and keep the steam locomotive running for years to come, more power to them!



This one is a bit shorter, and shows #3985 at 70 mph



The old lady is running hot, straight, and normal. With any luck, modern science will keep these beauties operating for many years. I really want to book a seat for myself and the girls on an excursion one day!
