Can you manually install Google Maps on iOS6? or are you stuck with the crap Apple is providing?

From what I've read, you can access google maps via the web interface, and Google says they are working on a native app, to be released in the future.

Gmail (poorly) duplicates native Mail functionality, but it's on there.

And the "web app" version of Google Maps continues to work just fine.

The Gmail app on iOS is laggy, buggy, and just generally ****. Google took forever putting it together and it's easily the worst mail app I've ever used. Frustrating as hell to use.

They just bought Sparrow, which is easily the best mail app I've ever used, so I'd be happy if they'd just rebrand Sparrow as the Gmail app and call it a day. But as it stand, the mobile interface of Gmail works better than the native app, and that's a sure sign of complete failure.

Ahh. Gotcha. Having never used it on iOS, I figured it'd be the same as the one I use on my phone. Fast, responsive, etc.

I can't beat the feeling that someone is intentionally nitpicking. I mean we all use map services and we are all aware that they sometimes don't match reality.

Apple had a perfectly good mapping system (Google Maps) that they chucked out the window in favor of a really crappy mapping system (TomTom based).

I can see why even the most Loyal Apple fanboi types might be getting weary of being on the 'island'..

That might make some difference if Google Maps were banned or something. As it stands now, it's just an additional mapping option. *shrug*

Like NephyrS, I prefer the Apple Maps, but they're certainly flawed. Once they fix them, I probably won't use Google Maps anymore. As it stands, I use Apple Maps when I can, and Google Maps when Apple Maps goes wonky.

The native Google Maps app was removed from the Apple marketplace for the simple reason that Apple doesn't want do deal with competition. It's a perfect example of them forcing their legion to use inferior technology.

You can still access Google Maps via a browser, but this is obviously a significantly diminished user experience, or the app wouldn't exist in the first place.

There was never a Google Maps app in the marketplace. Google is preparing one, though reports vary as to whether it's already been submitted for approval or if they're still working on it.

Apple's OS came with a competitor's product built into the OS as a default. There's no reason to leave that in if Apple believed it could create a better solution first-party. They obviously believed they could, and I believe they built a very good framework but failed to populate it properly and it was clearly not ready for primetime. Software being rushed out the door happens all the time. Apple clearly could have handled Maps' launch better, with options including delaying the product until it was up to standards, but moving away from Google Maps is not a bad thing.

Nah, Google and Apple were once pretty friendly, when Google was just another developer. Apple got a nice map app from Google for the iPhone native install, and there was even a little cross-pollination on each other's executive boards between the two. Then Google went from being an Apple developer to being an Apple competitor with Android. Thus was the Wrath of Jobs invoked and the era of Play Nice was replaced with the era of Sue Everybody. I'm actually kind of surprised it took this long for Apple to come up with their own map app.

I think I might delay updating iOS5 for a while, I like Google Maps as it is. I've got other money priorities for now, so I don't feel an urgent need to upgrade my iPhone 4.

Maps is one of the single most important things to me on my phone, and with respect Farsky, using google maps 'when things go wonky' requires you to know the destination you're being lead to isn't your destination before you get there - often not the situation when using a maps app.

With no streetview to check whether the shop exists, searches that don't return, no pedestrian or public transit directions, etc, apple maps is just not ready.

I understand that they believe it is as good as it can get without use - that a few million people using it (and presumably reporting errors) will improve it quickly, but in my opinion this is a profoundly unapple move. They are putting the priority of them, as a company, before that of the consumer. Usually they align their priority with that of the consumer.

Combine that new behaviour with their renowned overcontrol of the ecosystem and tendency to refuse to permit meaningful competition, and it leaves a bad taste in this fanbois mouth.

We'll see. I'll give it a few months before deciding between iPhone5 and Galaxy SIII, but prior to this debacle it would have been the 5 without any question. I've always thought iPhone was the best of both worlds - googles excellent cloud software with apples excellent UX and hardware build.

Maybe not any more.

By the same token, there's that ever-so-popular saying about fixing things that ain't broke.

• Did the Google maps work well, and were the users happy with it?
• Was Apple paying royalties or licensing fees to Google for the use of their maps?
• Is Apple monetizing their new maps app in some way?

From what I've read so far, the Google maps worked beautifully and Apple isn't charging anyone for the new app.
That leaves (in my mind, at least) point #2 as the only rational business justification for the time and money they must have poured into developing a replacement.

And let's face it, if you're going to replace a competitor's product with one of your own, you *really* ought to make sure yours is at least as good as theirs, or people are (rightfully) going to complain.

Personally, I don't view this as a case of Apple-bashing. We're bashing the less-than-optimal results of what seems, in hindsight, to have been either a poorly-conceived or poorly-executed business decision that could have happened to anybody. Or, to put it another way - "I don't care who ya are, that's funny right there".

I don't understand how Apple is not getting sued for playing a monopoly. Wasn't Microsoft sued because they pre-loaded IE onto their desktops? I fail to see how Apple pre-loading Crapple Maps is any different.
