There is, but that's exceedingly granular when talking about the religious breakdown of a large country like Iran. We could break it down to Sunni, Shi'ite and other sects perhaps, but that, much like the Pentecostal-Lutheran thing, doesn't say much about how devout they are. That's a lot harder to measure, although it's safe to assume that Iranians have a wide range of how committed they are to Islamic practice, and which of those practices are most important to them.

In other words, while it isn't safe to assume all Iranian muslims are created equal in terms of being devoutly Muslim, it is safe to assume any given Iranian is a Muslim of one sort or another in the absence of evidence to the contrary.

Aizle, why do you think violence is "awesome"? The year is 2012, not [insert barbaric age here].

Violence in and of itself isn't awesome.

However, women rebelling against the kind of oppression they receive in Iran IS awesome.

The 'oppressive douchebags' like this man are also victims of the system, since he was educated with wrong beliefs. If he grew up in the U.S., he would most likely not have made those comments to these women. Furthermore, there are ways to solve issues without violence.

Sometimes the only thing people like that understand is violence.

You mean the system that started back in 610-632 A.D.? The ship has already sailed on preventing people from being educated with beliefs that are "wrong" (by our standards) in that regard. The fact is that he didn't grow up in the U.S.

Some issues can be solved without violence. Some cannot. In fact, just because there are ways to solve some issues without violence does not mean that violence should always be avoided when possible. Britain and France tried to solve an issue without violence once, and it didn't work out too well; probably with a lot more violence being necessary in the long run.

Anyhow, it's patently obvious you're only saying this to disagree with everyone else. Quit trolling.

The women could have diffused the situation with the man without violence. It was totally unnecessary here to turn a verbal confrontation into something physical.

On the larger scale of this issue, I think eventually women's liberation will happen as a result of social media and ubiquitous information technology that the government will be unable to stop. Western culture will then seep into their society and cause lots of change. I don't think violence is necessary for this. It's just a matter of time though.

The fact that:
1) The girls in this story were wearing clothes considered inappropriate to the cleric,
2) The girls talked back to the cleric instead of obeying him,
3) The girls felt confident enough to actually initiate violence against the cleric, and
4) The cleric didn't even file a complaint against the assault
shows just how much Western influence has already seeped into the region.

1. How do you know?
2. Why should they?

Btw I should have said "defused" the situation... at least I caught my own error.

1. It appears from the article that the man was only speaking to them, not being threatening.

2. Because escalating a verbal situation to something physical does more harm (can hospitalize someone) than good. Also it can cause lasting psychological harm on the people involved.

So what? Exactly what course of action would they have followed to "defuse" the situation? Complied with his demand to cover up? That clearly would have been unacceptable to them.

2. Because escalating a verbal situation to something physical does more harm (can hospitalize someone) than good.[/quote]

Explain how the harm of hospitalizing one Islamic cleric is greater than the good of women standing up to being made second-class citizens.

The possibility of lasting psychological harm from a minor street altercation is so minor as to be irrelevant.

Granted I don't know all that much about Islam, and they may very well have some kind of confirmation of faith when children reach an age where they're expected to be able to reason for themselves.

I don't have time to go look this up, but my understanding is no. Basically when children are born their father whispers the Islamic creed in their ear and they are of the Islamic faith. After that point to renounce is to loose your family at best, your life at worst.
