It's not shitty if the cable requires a semiconductor-based electronic component. (Here's another clue: Every adapter these days requires a semiconductor-based electronic component.)

It sounds to me like Apple contracted a new component from TI, who then designed and built it.

It depends on what the chip does and if third party manufacturers can easily get compatible chips. If the chip's entire purpose is to provide a digital signature saying it's Apple(tm) brand, then that sucks. If the chip adds some new functionality to the cable, then that's ok.

Cable chips are neither new, nor solely about lockin.

My understanding is that the 30 pin adapter is a DAC. Its how it provides analogue audio/video output over only 9 pins.

Thunderbolt cable is active, not just wire to wire - i.e the chip does stuff.

Lightning at least dynamically assigns pins depending on how its inserted.

Has anyone seen any proof the lightning chip is authentication? Everything i've seen is just speculation.

All I am saying is there are a lot of recent moves (lawsuits, maps, changing the cable making it more expensive) that are causing me personally to seriously reconsider who I am going to "buy" my next phone from.

Building for the futar, the chip could be anything.
