I'm mulling starting a new PBP game-- I'm currently in the brainstorming phase but three directions interest me:

a) a 3.5 partially inspired by the premise of Revolution - sort of a 1980s' D&D Cartoon meets Forgotten Realms. Characters would play modern characters (and thus starting as level 1, with no knowledge of any languages or Lore) thrown into a world where magic exists, and none of their technology works. (Was thinking about throwing a whole city through a rift)

b) a light hearted 3.5 game, with points for silly. OOTS meets Talya's pirates meets Darths&Droids

c) a darker Firefly universe game (though using another ruleset, May switch back to D6)

Thoughts?

A could be fun. However I would somehow give them the ability to speak common. It could be part of whatever effect shifted the entire city.

Option A has started to percolate and I've gotten some interesting ideas on plot on that one.

Still brainstorming but what about the following guidelines for character generation: (suggestions welcome)
Characters may take arcane classes as their first level, but only classes which do not study for spells (ie, sorcerers are ok, but not wizards) Wizard, archivist etc characters will accessible once an in-game resource has been located. (Teacher, spellbook, etc)
Divine classes are acceptable but should be taken from one of Earth's religions.
All skills, proficiencies & feats must have an IC explanation.
Even a 1st level fighter won't be automatically granted weapon proficiencies. Possible explinations could include a recreational hunter, martial arts hobbiest, soldier or police officer might have bow, sai, dagger(KA-BAR), or club (police baton) would be perfectly valid.


The premise would be something like this: in a small midwestern town (have not selected which) residents go to bed one evening on the winter solstice. Overnight, the town is brought through a rift. The transition rendered all chemical reactants basically inert (gunpowder, gasoline ceases to function) -the town received its power from another city and when those lines were severed, electrical power failed. Batteries & generators were wiped out. Electronics were all fried by the massive EM pulse associated with the rift.

They wake to find that not only have they been transported here, but that the towns children have been carried off in the night. Not simply vanished, but evidence of break ins that no one heard. (The transition rendered everyone unconscious for a time)

thinking maybe a 42 or 44 point buy to reflect modern healthcare, education, nutrition.

No multiclass penalties for the first MC.
(since many will be confined to classes that are not their first choice)

Wanting to open up the possiblity of other races so I'm thinking that some individuals will have their 'natural' physical characteristics warped the longer their on the magical side of the rift. (lets say at 2nd level you gain half the traits associated with a race, and at 3rd you're fully considered part of that race)

Characters should have a reason to leave the town they're in and explore (For most characters it will take the form of a connection to one of the kidnapped children-- neighbor's kid and parents can't go after, their own child, grandchild, etc.
