Isn't this what we've been complaining about since the beginning of Nintendo's Wii era?

Yup. I saw that commercial when I was watching TV last night and /facepalmed. Nintendo is affixing itself firmly in the casual market.

Trench warfare with Sony and Microsoft isn't going to keep them going.

Honestly, I spend more time playing dink games on my iPad than playing Xbox games. Those Xbox games I have played have primarily been Xbox arcade games. The existence of both of those markets owe more to Nintendo's move towards non-gamers with the Wii than anyone is ever going to admit.

They owe nothing to the Wii. They owe everything to the fact that smartphones are available and games on them are easily consumable. Someone didn't just start playing Bejeweled on a phone because she played some Wii Tennis and it "opened her mind" to gaming. Boredom + easily-accessible gaming content = market explosion. The key ingredient in there wasn't the separate existence of the Wii, it was the smartphone explosion and the idea of an app store. By the same token, we're now used to pay $0.99 for a game, rather than a ridiculous $60. Hence the rise of "arcade" games.

I'd also like to point out that Xbox Live Arcade launched two years before the Wii did. The only thing anyone can thank the Wii for is shitty motion controls and making grandparents want to play.

Also a good excuse to "accidentally" smack someone in the face with a controller when they are beating you at a game.

Funny that we should mention smartphones. That market shares much common ground with the console wars for hate, vitriol, and general expressions of butt-hurt.

I held out with Nintendo for the longest time. Stuck by them even while the Playstation was beginning to encroach on their territory.

Nintendo has abandoned me. What I remember so fondly about Nintendo is only a memory. They did not evolve as Microsoft and Sony did and they have lost me forever. Surely this means nothing to them, but I am saddened to have them turn their back on me.

What? Nintendo is the only console attempting to give you games you can actually play. Aren't you the one who has complained about the lack of time you have to play games, and the series that you're massively behind on? Microsoft and Sony aren't interested in fixing that problem. You're not their target customer. You are Nintendo's target customer, you just want to believe you're 22 years old with as much free time as you'd like.

I don't want to play Mario Tennis/party/kart, etc... anymore.

While I do not have the time to play such large immersive games anymore (Mass Effect, Red Dead, Arkham City) that doesn't change the fact that such games interest me FAR more than anything Nintendo has to offer any longer.

I can understand showing the girl drawing a piece of apple pie and then saying "I'm not a gamer." She's right, she's not. She's just drawing on a 3DS. But the girl who's playing super mario, and then states she's not a gamer? YOU WERE LITERALLY JUST PLAYING A GAME FIVE SECONDS AGO! By definition, for whatever period of time, you were a gamer, that was playing a game.

Regardless, the idea that the term "gamer" has a negative connotation is hilarious. "I'm not one of those filthy gamers, I just play games sometimes." "I'm not a trekkie/er, I just like to watch star trek." "I'm not a crackhead, I just like to hit the pipe when the mood strikes me."

The implied word is 'hardcore'. Of course, that word has a different connotation outside the gaming community, and it would not be a good idea for Nintendo to use it in their commercials...
