So what do you think came first - the use of the term to refer to a couple or the use of the term in reference to relationships such as married to his job or two items married together?

My guess is married refers to couples and the other way to use the word evolved.

I always liked that site. It backs up what I found in the Middle English Dictionary and Oxford English Dictionary*.

And I'm disappointed that there are no Vegas weddings too!
