I looked in settings, it's not there. And if there's an option for a flashlight or PTT, it should ask my permission before activating them, not turn them on automatically and then make me turn them off.

settings --> language and input --> (select your KB--> Auto Correction

Also, if you're annoyed by the default KB, Swiftkey 3 is far superior (IMO) especially the predictive correction.

The Flashlight is a widget that's part of the Android OS. Its a widget that can be added to the home screen. I've found it handy when I've only got my phone nearby.

I haven't seen PTT except through a 3rd party app like Voxer.

Thanks. The path ended up being somewhat different (hidden under English language) but I found it.

Yes, they are. Just because you don't want them, or are irrationally angered by their inclusion, doesn't mean they aren't.

So, aside from the feature bloat, how is the device workin for you?

No, they aren't. They're on my phone. I paid for it and I pay the bill for the telephone service. They are not "features" any more than the stupid vendor software on the laptops I bought at Best Buy a few years back are "Features". They consume memory and resources I paid for, and without my permission.

Just because you may want them or think they're "awesome" does not somehow mean they have any business being there for anyone else, and it certainly is not irrational of me to be angered by some corporation foisting unnecessary software on me.

I'll remind you of what Coro said in the first page of this thread:

Quote:
Many of you have lost sight of this, because your smartphones are billed as swiss army knives. You expect that they should do everything. That isn't how it works. If you want to cut a board, you use a saw. You don't use a hammer. Hammers are for pounding nails. Electronic devices are no different.

What do you do with a phone? You make phone calls, you check email, and you doodle around on the internet. Those are the main functions people are looking for in their phone.

You can replace "check e-mail" with "text" and "doodle on the internet" with "GPS". I might mess around on the internet, but that isn't the reason I got the damn phone. An electronic device I'm paying for is not there so that these corporations can advertise to me, and if I want to load it up with PDFs of D&D books so I can reply to Talya and Rane and Rori's posts, every byte that's taken up with some idiotic flashlight application is one less bight available for me to do what I want to on a device I pay for.

The only thing irrational is how offended some people get at the idea that not everyone wants to buy into the latest gadget craze. If it were up to me, the phone would run on MS-DOS. People need to get over the idea that they need to have some form of electronic communication with them in order to survive a trip to Hooters.

The physical characteristics of the device seem to be adequate and it appears to be in an acceptable state of repair. It does, indeed, seem much physically tougher than the Iphone 4 my wife opted for.

It's nicer to have a larger screen than the blackberry that the Army now insists I carry around so I can donate time to the military, and the features specific to the ruggedized phone, such as the compass (on the boot up screen) moonrise/moonset (important when using night vision) sunrise sunset (same) and other features make it an excellent recommendation to all those who pointed it out to me. I appreciate that very much.

Any complaints I have are entirely about the software. At least I can go into the running applications and shut off a number of pointless drivel, but its irritating to have to do that every time I power it on.

Depending on how comfortable you are with rooting things, you may find useful info about apps here.

i may end up doing that. voiding a warranty is a small concern compared to getting rid of pointless crap.

After doing a little bit of searching, the phones on the M100+ version of the software have locked bootloaders and no current exploits to obtain root.

http://androidforums.com/commando-all-t ... ost4817039
Quote:
Go to Settings
Go to About Phone
Look at Build Number.
It will say C771M?? What is your numbers after M? If it is M80 you can root. If it is M100 or higher you cannot root.

So, in the meantime, you may have to suffer a bit with the bloat.

See that thing at the bottom of your message about how it was sent with Tapatalk? I refuse to have that..

DE, i only included that to show you that I was posting with it. Have you ever seen that in my posts before? It's completely optional in the settings.

I don't post much from tapatalk, but I do read the forums with it when i'm out to lunch or have a few minutes of downtime and I'm not near a computer. It makes reading the forums so much easier than trying to deal with a browser, and zooming in and all that...

I used to be right there with you regardin 'the cloud' and streaming audio apps. They were just so much clutter.

My attitude towards dropbox (one of several decent cloud storage options) has gone through several phases... "Don't bother me with that CRAP", "Ok, show me what this thing can do", "wow, that's pretty cool", "OMG I love this thing!" and "YOU'LL PRY THIS APP FROM MY COLD DEAD HANDS!".

Seriously Dropbox is the epitome of integration when it comes to smart devices, and PC's etc. I have mine set so when I take a picture with my phone (something I rarely used to do for the hassle of getting them off), it automatically uploads to dropbox. And I have the dropbox app on all of my computers (home and work). I stash files there all the time. It integrates completely seamlessly into your windows explorer and just becomes another folder. That picture you take with your camera is on on your PC.. ALL of your PC's.. and you can right click that picture and 'copy public link' and paste it anywhere to share that file with anyone. It's so much more simple than dragging it off over USB, or even emailing it off.. especially if you are talking about lots of pictures. And the best thing about it.. its FREE! (up to 2G or so).... with paid services available for more space.

That flashlight app is REALLY handy. Maybe not when your out in the field, or otherwise equipped with a real flashlight, but I use mine every single day as a flashlight when I'm walking through the dark house. No need to turn on lights.. just open up a the phone and its enough light to see by. I don't bother to actually use the app, I just use the ambient light from the device add a little light to dark places.

I have also replaced my $300 GPS in my car with a dash mount for my phone, and I use my phone as my GPS.. I've also stopped using a traditional alarm clock.. My phone is kind enough to wake me every morning, and since I always have it within earshot, I also use it to remind of things (appointments, work tasks being due, etc..).. I also use the audio recorder quite often for various things... There are also lots of great grocery list apps, and 'find a good place to eat in a strange neighborhood' apps...

The streaming music has replaced local radio stations when I'm in the car. I have a bluetooth enabled car stereo (not necessary, and Aux jack works too), and I either stream my music collection using Google Music (i have several albums stored locally for those times when I'm not in a service area), or, if I'm in the mood to listing to something different, I use Pandora to stream a channel of whatever I'm in the mood for. Johnny Cash? yup, got that.. Andres Segovia? Yup, got that too. Rolling Stones? yup.. Vince Gill? uhuh.. Derek Trucks? Every song from every album, right at your fingertips . I still have a few gripes about Pandora's free service, and I'm not sure it justifies the cost of the subscription to solve those problems.. yet.. but I'm getting there.

Even security companies like ADT, etc.. are integrating their home security systems into your device, and many daycare centers allow you to keep an eye on your kid using apps... every bank has an app to allow you to do things like deposit a check from anywhere at any time (just take a picture of it!).

Want to take a quick scan of the headlines while you are sitting in the waiting room? Check the score of the game? Check The Glade ? Email? Whatever.. It's all at your fingertips..

I could go on and on... That smartphone has a ton of potential to simplify your life.. if you just let it.. Use it to its full potential.. get your moneys worth out of it.. justify the expense...

The cloud sucks *** if you consistently wander into areas where there is no data coverage which I would imagine is a big problem when you are patrolling the Mexican border in Texas.

Midgen, I'm glad you find all those things so handy. I'm not saying they shouldn't exist. I'm saying I don't want them and that they shouldn't be on my phone until and unless I ask for them.

I don't want one "do everything" device. Take your GPS example. If my phone is doing that, I can't talk on it. In the field, GPS isn't for driving. I know my area. It's for when I'm in the brush, separated from my partner, and can't tell where I am because it's dark and one mesquite tree looks the same as all the others.

Extra icons for useless crap just make it harder to find the one I need. Surfing the web is coool, sure. However, I want just a browser for that. I don't want separate icons for Youtube or this stupid bing seatch engine or NFL or whatever.

I definitely do not want any Cloud. I want to have to transfer files on USB or by e-mail because then I'm manually controlling what happens. I don't want access to all kinds of music and even less to have things trying to sell it to me. If I have a file on a specific computer, CD, or USB drive its because I want it there, not anywhere else.

eAs for the flashlight, I just don't have a light on on that case. My wife likes little night lights anyhow. Programs to check on kids are appalling. I don't even want to think about wthat.

Computers and electronics are great, but I am not interested in turning a telephone into a roure into my life for every fool with a "convenience" to sell, nor in tplerating the antics of a company that sells you a phone, tells you its also a computer (for which it is wholly inafequate) then turns around and doesn't let you control the device so that it can essentially spam you.

DE,

You may be one of the people who just is not the proper marketing target for a smart phone.

myself, between my tablet and my phone... I barely feel the need to use my laptop, except for gaming.

I havn't had anyone try to sell me a car that lets the dealer determine how to drive it or tells you only they can check the oil.

Unfortunately, simple phones like that don't have GPS or easy texting, or the other functions that make the Commando attractive. The phone itself is a fine gadget. Its all the extras, the fact that you can't get rid of them, and all the ways it wants to connect to other things.

My solution has been to shut off syncing, shut off backup, turn off 2 of 3 of the GPS functions, and delete the software updates of as many things as possible. I did decide to try out this little posting program since its free, but I shut off and deleted the software that let the little market run after that. As soon as the phone is on I turn off the flashlight, email, PTT, google, memo and a few other processes and I wentthrough and deleted as much data from programs as I could.

That seems to at least stop some of this stuff from working properly, and keeps outside communication down.

I'm a little amazed some of you guys are so cool with your data going out onto all these servers and between these devices. Oh, and I like manual transmissions too.

Personally, GPS isn't that big of a deal to me. I'd love a phone that had great reception, good, clear voice quality, easy texting, and a simple, functional contacts app. And was durable as hell.

And nothing else.

Yeah, but I have devices for that. And I don't really like all-in-one solutions, as I find they aren't as good in any one area.

But I don't have a home phone, or a work phone, so having a phone that is reliable, has good reception, and doesn't really do anything else is important to me.

For everything else, a tablet with month-by-month wireless works great.
