Most scientific papers are barely readable full page on my 24" monitor side-by-side, and my eyesight is pretty good.

But yeah, I like my 16:10 monitor, where I can have two papers I'm writing side by side, or two versions up for comparison.

Different case on a tablet screen, imo- rarely are they large enough to, in my mind, adequately display two full pages side-by-side.

Um 4:3 is a ratio as is 16:9 so to say keyboards take up too much space is really about the screen size, not the ratio?

Keyboards generally span 100% of the screen width so if you're typing in landscape mode on a 16:9 screen, you've got more space to cover.

That's why we call it "widescreen"

What Lenas said.

And additionally, with tablets (like these) we're usually talking about relatively similar dimension devices. IE, we're talking about either 10" 4:3 vs 16:9 tablets or 8" 4:3 vs 16:9 tablets.

So for a keyboard to be the same width (and roughly typeable with both hands) it pretty much has to extend the width of the screen. So..... Yes, it does take up more of the screen.

Hence the arguments that a 7.9" 4:3 ratio (iPad mini) has more usable screen size than a 7.7" 16:9 Nexus, for instance.

You have a bigger screen in picture 2, that has nothing to do with the aspect ratio. Just as you can change the aspect ratio on your tv.

Better way to say it. Onscreen keyboard runs the length of screen, if the screen is 10 inches the keyboard will run 10 inches and the aspect ratio has nothing to do with it. The statement above really means I like the iPad mini better because the smaller screen is easier/more natural for me to type on. Which is a statement I tend to agree with myself.

You're still not getting it.

If a screen is a 4:3 aspect ratio, and is 7" wide, it will be 5.25" tall. A 7" 16:9 will be a little under 4" tall.

The keyboard, at the full width of the screen, will be the same height on each.

That leaves a little more than 1.25"of extra view space above the keyboard on a 4:3 screen. And if you're doing much writing its well worth it.

Pretty sure Farsky explicitly stated 4:3 is easier to type on.

Edit: yeah

I can't speak for Nephyr, but for me, it's a usability issue. I don't like reading on 16x9 tablets (I don't even like reading on a 4x3 tablet in landscape mode). Also, 16x9 is a pain to type on in landscape mode (the keyboard eats up so much of the screen and it's difficult to see what you're typing). 4x3 for a tablet device A) offers a more comfortable hold in either orientation, B) allows for a more comfortable, book-like canvas for reading, and C) allows for far better landscape typing.

It's a personal preference, but for me at least, it's an important one.

Yeah, it's easier to type on because you can see the words you're typing (the text entry area is uselessly thin on a 16x9 display, whereas a 4x3 allows greater visible text entry space), not because the keys are easier to press. Sorry for the confusion.

I'm not sure what your point is there. He says exactly what I just expressed- that 4:3 is easier to type on because the keyboard eats up less space.....

Except, don't you guys shun landscape mode anyways? You want to read on something paper-proportioned, right?

Therefore, why is landscape mode keyboard usability even a point of discussion?

I mean, I don't have a dog in the race; I don't care whether you prefer 4:3 tablets or 16:10/9 ones. I'm just confused as to why this is even a gripe.

I like to read in landscape mode, yes. I don't like to type in it, however.

Not big enough for fast two handed typing in portrait.

In other words, two different uses, both of which I prefer a 4:3 resolution for.

Not trying to say one is better for everyone, just what works best for me.

I don't like to read in landscape mode...I like to type in it. Read = portrait, type = landscape. Also video-watch in landscape of course, but that's neither here nor there.

Now I am back to headscratching. 16:9 is a ratio 4:3 is a ratio. IPad mini is smaller so 4:3 keyboard is proportionally larger on the device but is physically 1/2 the size.

The key sizes on the keyboard don't really change size. If you have a "7-inch" screen that is 4x3 and a comparable "7-inch" screen (or ~10", or whatever), in landscape mode their keyboards are pretty much the same size, because there's not much difference in the "width" of the screen, and the keyboards fill the entire width. So having the same screen size class but in a 4x3 ratio, you get additional room on top of the keyboard that allows you to see your text input area.

Does this help?

The problem with this not the screen size, it's poor keyboard design...

I'm entertained by Amazon's front page. At the risk of neurological damage to Farskeee's head, let me put Amazon vs. Apple on display, here, as presented by Amazon.

I like it. Go for the throat marketing!

The thing that makes me curious is that last line- the "Ultra-fast MIMO Wi-Fi", as I was under the impression that the dual-band a/b/g/n in the mini was "better".

Also interesting that the first leaks look to be that the A5 chip in the mini is clocked at 1.2 Ghz, a nice improvement from the iPad 2, and very close to the 1.3 found in the iPhone 5.

It's a nice jab, but it would work better if I didn't have a Kindle Fire HD that I'm about to take back because of its crappiness. I have an iPad 2 and know how well it works. And it beats the **** out of the KFHD's laggy ***.

Again, as I said before, specs are irrelevant.

As I brought up in another thread, the number of pixels per square inch on these screens is becoming irrelevant.

My sister-in-law has a Kindle Fire. I've seen the size of the screen. It doesn't matter what the resolution of the screen is, I would not watch movies on it. The screen is physically too small.
