Since Jelly Bean, my phone knows that when I'm in the area of my work, when afternoon comes, i'm probably going to be heading home soon, and starts telling me how long my commute is, without even opening maps or nav...

Same thing in the morning with the traffic and weather... and it always tells me when a game is about to start that I might be interested in, and updates me with scores periodically throughout the games...

All of it is hands off for me..

This sort of thing would drive me absolutely insane. Really, I'm honestly curious how you can even stand it, much less enjoy it. I'm not trying to be an ***; I'm positively astounded that anyone actually likes this. It sounds like that Adam Sandler movie with the crazy remote come to life.

This is the first time I've ever been this genuinely displeased (as you put it) with an electronic device. I've had others that weren't all they were cracked up to be (3 different laptops in particular) but none that were so incredibly frustrating. It was almost all over earlier this afternoon when it started playing grunge rock (when it was supposed to be in silent mode) for no apparent reason. Eventually I determined this was how it told me some alert I really didn't care about anyhow was pending, but it took me almost 5 minutes to figure out what was doing it, by the end of which I was entertaining thoughts involving a tire iron.

I'm going to give it a week and if I haven't come to terms with it, I may suck down the restocking fee and whatever else and get a BlackBerry.

It really doesn't bother me at all.. it's just notifications on the notification bar. I can configure it to be completely passive if I want.. and I can choose to ignore them.. it's really not that hard... in most cases, it's just really convenient...

I'm going to try the direct method of calling customer service and demanding they remove anything don't want on there, from Bing all the way down to VPN Client.

Yeah... good luck with that.

I can guarantee you'll do nothing but frustrate yourself and the customer service person you talk to.

I agree.. why would you even do that other than to project your frustration onto some poor customer service person? They didn't decide to put those apps on the phone, and can't do anything to help you remove them either. If they can't be uninstalled my the normal means (dropping them onto the trash can icon), you are stuck with them...

Either deal with it, or take it back and get your money back...

I'm not calling tovent at the customer service person, and I am quite certain there is someone up the line that can get rid of this stuff. For$150 a month between the 2 phones, I expect them to at a minimum give me a good reason it can't be done. "We don't want to" and variations on it are not a good reason.

Sadly, the industry disagrees with you. I'm not saying you are wrong to want such things, but unfortunately the carriers are paying for the devices and aren't going to change their minds on this as long as it is the case.

Except they aren't. I paid $320 for the phone. I was not presented any terms or conditions either.

This too. I have no idea how it knows, but google maps knows how long its going to take me to get where I'm going no matter what.

I have yet to see it wrong. I'm quite fond of the traffic widget. Set one to work and one to home and it tells me how shitty the 405 is going to be :)

It kind of pisses me off to be honest because I'll hop in the car and the Google maps will say I am two hours from XXX and I laugh, "Haha maybe if I was planning on doing the speed limit fool!" Then proceed to do 80 instead of 65 the whole way. Somehow Google Maps KNEW I was going to be speeding and the two hours is 100% accurate :(

What is it you're worried about?

I don't know if my wife is going to be too keen on the restocking fee or paying more for another phone.

There isn't. If there was, everyone would have a rooted phone with an unlocked bootloader and run Jelly Bean.

Its on the phone and its not coming off. Best thing you can do is ignore it.

Yeah, that's not a battle you're going to win, DE. Return the phone or deal with the applications.

I suppose I'll just keep it and wait for someone to come up with a root. At lest I can keep it mostly crippled by rejecting anything itasks me to agree to, data off most of the time and not letting it sync up. I juust have to keep going in and turning off programs.

Why do you need to keep turning them off? Are you shutting your phone off every day? Why not just leave it on? I restart my phone once a week at most.

I wish I knew. Every so often I open the list of programs and the sync service, the dockking station program and some google service are running again. I keep force shutting them off. With any luck they'll crash.

To be honest, it sounds like Windows Phone would be more up your alley if you're going to stick with any kind of smart phone. You can remove any tiles from the start screen that you don't want, leaving only the phone tile if it please you. Also, it has a battery saver mode built into the OS that, when turned on, disables all automatic services from syncing unless you manually open them. The operating system doesn't leave things running in the background like Android does, so no need for a task manager (and indeed, no existence of one).

That would definitely be better. Unfortunately I don't know that they can be had through Verizon or with the Commando.

Verizon, yes... Something built like the Commando out of the box, I don't think so.

The google services are probably part of the android OS.

FWIW, just leave them alone, they're not worth your time to keep turning off. The phone is designed to run fine with background processes in operation.

Services are different than programs. They run in the background and take up minimal overhead.

I understand turning off sync and whatnot to prevent it from doing so, or other notifications, but IMO, leave the bg processes alone. FCing things isn't worth the trouble if they're meant to be running.

Basically DE You are doing the equivalent of pulling up Windows task manager, switching over to Processes and killing all the background services you see that are actually essential for the phone to run.

Not really. The functions I'm turning off don't have anything to do with the function of the phone; they do other things like try to sync up applications, relate to charging stations I don't own, DRM, google services I don't want, and things like that.

The other things I've turned off are 2 of the 3 location services (only the one that GPS uses is active) and pretty much every other setting relating to syncing, backing up data, or anything like that. I actually turn off data use whenever not actually using it myself, and if it gives any sign of trying to update a program or ask me to consent to any kind of agreement, I just decline it and mark that on the list of icons to be deleted when its eventually possible. If there were a way to kill essential processes and cripple the phone, I would just in hopes of being able to get access to the ability to delete ****, but I can't.
