So, I work the night shift. That means when I get in, it's empty, and I get to park on the first floor right next to the exit. When I leave, it's filled up probably to the seventh or eighth floor. That means all the people streaming in want my parking spot, and let me tell you, this SUCKS.

More often than not, when I exit the staircase and start walking towards my car, a nice little funeral procession will start forming behind me as one of the cars starts following me, waiting for me to get into my car. This causes all the other traffic entering the garage to back up behind them. Once I get to my car, I've learned I have about fifteen seconds to get in and start backing up before the honking starts. One time the guy actually rolled his window down and started cursing at me when I didn't get moving "fast enough."

Even worse is when you make it to the car without anyone having followed you. Twice now, when I turned the car on and turn the lights on, someone that had already passed me in the parking garage stopped, shifted into reverse, and cut me off backing out of the spot so they can get in position to take it. Of course I don't expect traffic to come from that direction so it's pretty nerve wracking when I start moving and then a huge SUV zooms past from there.

Also, there needs to be a universal signal for "I'm not leaving, I'm just getting something out of the car" that you can flash to the guy leading the procession behind you, so you can head the whole process off without suffering all the glares from the dozen cars that just got held up as they drive past you.

For two weeks straight take ten minutes extra at work. Go to your car get in, and just pull something out of it and walk back into the building and wait.

I absolutely agree with Elmo. I would likely do this myself.

When I used to work in the King of Prussia Plaza (Huge mall in the Philadelpha suburbs), I called it "The Parking Game" when dealing with this during the holiday season. I actually reveled when the opportunity arose to do exactly as Elmo describes.

Turn around, make eye contact, shake your head and mouth the words, "Sorry, not leaving," while mildly waving a hand. They'll drive off.

Yep, I agree, Although I tend to ignore...and if they honk, I sit and warm my car up even longer...maybe even act like I'm calling someone.

People do this all the time in the grocery store parking lots down here. It's really obnoxious, because by waiting, they block traffic down the rows of parking spaces. This then pushes traffic back into the main parts of the lot where you enter and exit. It's not pretty, and they'll sit there and wait through some elderly couple loading 20 bags of groceries. At least they don't honk at the old folks.

Heaven forbid some people walk a little further in a parking lot, OMG...it's unbelievable.

Whenever I see the procession, I always get out of my car and go back inside. I've never had someone honk at me while I was backing out, but I'd pull back into the parking space and turn the engine off. **** that ****.

I park at the first easy space I see - usually far away. A little walk isn't a bad thing.

A little walk is usually a good thing. I use Aethien's routine when I'm not leaving. Might be a California thing.

I would too, except I usually just want to leave too much.

I've never gotten this (especially in Texas where you don't have to deal with snow). Unless your impaired, You can part in the back 40 and walk to the store by the time you spend waiting on people to vacate a space or circling the lot looking very a cherry spot.

In Texas, it's the summer heat that causes it. When it's 105 out...

I'm walking with a cane these days and we still park out in the lot...I want the exercise despite hubby wanting me to get a temporary handicap placard to avoid another fall. I hate people blocking the way because they just have to have that closer parking space.
