Hasn't been too bad in my part of Maryland. A little flickering power early yesterday and a little flooding in my garage.

Stay safe you all. My prayers and thoughts are with you.

Please check back in to let us know how you are.

Hurricane Ike and no power for about 2 weeks and no water for 3 days taught me some major lessons. I now have hurricane clips on the roof, a portable generator, 3 weeks of emergency food, 2 cases of bottled water, and containers ready to store a lot more.

Eye went over my house (Cape May, across Del Bay, my house)

It was windy. /shrug

Didn't lose power, no damage.

Followed the storm to my office this morning. Again, windy. It flooded out one river that I had a hard time crossing. 5th bridge I tried got me over.

If I'm not mistaken, I believe it's a federal mandate. I think you'll probably be covered with something like a $500 deductible.

We also suffered greatly. My grass got wet. And I mean, like, almost all of it. The news is saying it might not dry until Thursday. Please send shamwows.

All ok here. Dad is in downtown manhattan. No power there, but water & gas still working. 6 subway tunnels flooded, water over the platforms, bus stations flooded, hudson broke its banks, water come to within 10m of their house - but very little wind damage, almost all flooding.

Sounds like we got off light.

Hop,

We had damage here in Columbus from Hurricane Ike, homeowners covered it after our deductible.

In PA, I had hurricane damage to my roof and water seepage damage to the drop ceiling in the room directly below the damaged roof. I forget which hurricane it was that damaged it, but my homeowner's insurance covered it.

Also, for those affected, I'm curious how your mobile/cell coverage was affected, if at all?

It is 7:30pm and First Energy has called it quits for the day. When I woke up I was one of 299 customers in my city without power, now 2200 of us lack it and statewide there are 215,000 First Energy customers alone without power, some until at least Saturday they are saying. Meantime temperatures are dropping into the low 40s with a constant rainfall. I suspect a lot of our elderly citizens are suffering very badly atm.

Someone remind me again why power lines are still suspended 20 feet in the air and threaded through tree limbs?

Their linesmen and backups put in a 20 hour shift already, I can't fault them. But damn the company for still having aerial lines after the 2003 power outage caused by a squirrel on these same damn lines (same company too).

No power here since 7"43 am. That is heat, water, power are out. Crank radio, cook stove, alcohol burners and candles are how we are getting buy. Laptop and phone as hotspot has about an hour left.

I'm sure a solar charger does a lot of good when the reason your power is out is because you're under this...

See if you can't find Quaker Steak and Lube. They had power all through the '03 blackout. Served wings the entire time!

Still without power since late Monday. Elmo stopped over my house last night in an attempt to burn it down....No wait, it was to drop off an alcohol burner for some additional heat and light.

PECO (electric company) has finally updated their outage center information on their website with an estimated time for our power to come back on...23:59 TOMORROW night.

At very least, I hope the estimate is accurate in that it is restored no later than that. We made it through 2 days of no power, what's two more. House is cold, but we're handling it and keeping the kids warm. We have a gas stove so we can light the burners with ease to cook.

Funny thing is we prepped for tons of water in the basement, but got none. Didn't dodge the power outage bullet, though.

First Energy has updated their total # without power to 1.5 million now. I am not sure how they are consistently knocking more and more people off the grid every day but if they keep this up they will take the Eastern Seaboard down again.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Northeast_blackout_of_2003
Spoiler:
Quote:
Findings
In February 2004, the U.S.-Canada Power System Outage Task Force released their final report, placing the causes of the blackout into four groups:[13]

First, that FirstEnergy (FE) and its reliability council "failed to assess and understand the inadequacies of FE’s system, particularly with respect to voltage instability and the vulnerability of the Cleveland-Akron area, and FE did not operate its system with appropriate voltage criteria".

Second, that FirstEnergy "did not recognize or understand the deteriorating condition of its system".

Third, that FirstEnergy "failed to manage adequately tree growth in its transmission rights-of-way".

Finally, the "failure of the interconnected grid's reliability organizations to provide effective real-time diagnostic support."

The report states that a generating plant in Eastlake, Ohio (a suburb of Cleveland) went offline amid high electrical demand, putting a strain on high-voltage power lines (located in a distant rural setting) which later went out of service when they came in contact with "overgrown trees". The cascading effect that resulted ultimately forced the shutdown of more than 100 power plants.

This trip caused load to transfer to other transmission lines, which were not able to bear the load, tripping their relays. Once these multiple trips occurred, multiple generators suddenly lost parts of their loads, so they accelerated out of phase with the grid at different rates, and tripped out to prevent damage.

Does anyone know if this is something you can ***** to your Senator/Representative about?

Remember Fyrfytr? Wasn't he on the Jersey shore somewhere, or even Cape May? But last we heard, he was headed for Antartica, right? Just wondering if he was back in New Jersey for this.

Anyway, good luck, folks. Hope you dry out and get power back soon.
