I still don't believe it.

Edit...I wonder if they will find a way to make that TV show now.

My initial thought on hearing this, was good, now maybe we'll get a good Star Wars movie. Followed closely by ooh, maybe they'll release a BD with unedited originals!

Overall, I think this is a good thing, Disney has shown they can do more than just children's movies, so there is a good chance they can do something positive with the intellectual properties.

Disney has also shown they can completely dilute and/or trash IPs with crappy cartoon series, too. Reference Ultimate Spider-Man.

Now, for a comic license, this isn't a huge concern. Comic fans and properties are no stranger to picking and choosing canon, and blithely going about their business without worrying about stuff like this.

Star Wars fans (and, generally, with notable exceptions due to their rarity, the management of the brand itself) are rabid about canon, on the other hand.

Actually, with the right planning and directors, I could get behind a reboot of the entire franchise. 9+ Star Wars movies, in sequence.

Star Wars, as a franchise, isn't that great. You've got two legitimately great movies, one that's pretty good, three pieces of ****, a crappy animated film (that spun off a decent animated show), and some "specials" from the '80s (about which the less said, the better). And the beloved "canon" was shot to **** by its own creator.

Let some talented writers and directors play in the sandbox now. Make this bird sing.

ILM is still going to be a gun-for-hire. I would imagine Skywalker Sound will remain the same.

Can Captain America and Indiana Jones team up now?

Of course they are. And that means that now Disney will have their paws in just about every movie hollywood makes.

(I also want to play "Spot the hidden Mickeys" in effects sequences.)

Howard the Duck is fantastically notable as an IP because it sparked a resurgence of comics and pulp-media as social commentary and satire. It's also fantastically notable as an IP for being largely super-hero null during the 70s and 80s as a print franchise. What Disney now owns, however, is both the film and screen franchises due to the acquisition of LucasFilms.

Also notable for being one of the worst films of all time! The Phantom Menace was merely bad. Howard the Duck was Razzie-dominating badness!

Willow was awesome.

When I heard this, I did a facepalm, but the more I think about it, the more I'm happy about this. There are a lot of stories that can be told, and provided they pull out the stops, it won't be terrible. Good as the original? Probably not - but that doesn't mean bad.

One prominent Disneyparks Blogger lamented that Disney was no longer creative, just buys up other people's IP and runs with it.

This is not new. Snow White was not an original story - Walt borrowed it from from the Brothers Grimm. Nor is it a sign that they lack creativity. Every story borrows heavily on what has come before, and honestly, companies are not creative. The people they hire are creative. So what if they buy existing property or hire people to come up with their own? (Which, incidentally, is everything pixar does - Original to Pixar.)

Personally, I hope this means they give Larry Holland a job again. Nothing would please me more. Aside from them getting Tim Schafer back too.

Sorry, guys. But Tim Schafer's not available. He's committed to work on a game on a $3 million dollar budget, so he's unavailable to be hired to work on a game with a Disney budget for the next few years until he delivers his crappy low budget one. ;)

i just worry, that given Disney's well known rabid trademark lawsuits if they wont stifle fan creations, or try to go after sites like DarthsandDroids

Yeah, I know. He talked about it at length at his panel at PAX. But after that... maybe?

Edit: And if Disney lawyers kill stuff like this, then they can go to hell and eat a bag of die.
