no they can't, those states passed laws that give the winner of the National popular vote the electoral college votes for that state.
only 2 states have proportional electoral college votes Maine and Nebraska.
Oddly enough it's all blue states that passed this law.
This could very well turn into unintended consequences.

Not this year, and as this plays out, it's actually and end run around the Constitution. From Wiki:

Quote:
The National Popular Vote Interstate Compact (NPVIC) is an agreement among several U.S. states. States passing this interstate compact have agreed to replace their current rules regarding the apportionment of presidential electors with rules guaranteeing the election of the presidential candidate with the most popular votes in all fifty states and Washington, D.C. The agreement is to go into effect only when the participating states that have joined the compact together have an absolute majority in the Electoral College. In the subsequent presidential election, the participating states would award all their electoral votes to the national popular vote winner, who as a result would win the presidency by winning more than half of electoral votes. Until the compact is joined by states with a majority of electoral votes, all states will continue to award their electoral votes in their current manner.

You mean the absurd scenario already occurring? I might give Mr. Sky a little undue grief about his choice of candidates, but his snark actually mirrors the popular reality: people will vote against Romney before they will vote for either. Obama will win the election for precisely the reasons Coro dictated: it's bad politics for the first minority President to not get re-elected.

Up until the economy crapped out, McCain was leading. McCain stopped his campagin and Obama kept swinging.

I don't think he ever had a chance. It was a perfect storm where no matter who you put up against Obama he was going to win. The only person who had a chance of beating him was Hillary Clinton. Given a choice between the two I would have actually taken her.

I think exactly this but with a little tinfoil hat theory that McCain was deliberately picked to lose so the economy could be pinned on the D's instead of the R's.

Washington is is A national popular vote state.
On April 28, 2009 — Governor Chris Gregoire signed the National Popular Vote bill, making Washington state the fifth state to join the "Agreement Among the States to Elect the President by National Popular Vote." Hawaii, Illinois, Maryland, and New Jersey previously enacted the National Popular Vote bill.

I was unaware of this. I will LMFAO if the MD EC goes to a republican.

This being stated-and taking into consideration the medias role in informing the public for the past year regarding the election- what do you think the reaction of the public will be to a Romney win?

I'll go ahead and say it. Romney wins, and there won't be much doubt. Not saying a landslide, but it won't come down to 3 days of recounts either.

It probably will if the race, as predicted, winds up being decided in Ohio were their policy regarding absentee balloting just changed in a way that has the potential to turn into a nightmare that will make hanging chads look like a holliday.

I think a few people here are hoping that while the vote may supposedly go for one candidate then the electoral college will change the vote the other direction. The general outcry over such a result would pave the way for the election reforms they want.

Why is it that voters who traditionally support Democratic Party candidates have the hardest time understanding the concept of a Republic? Indeed, why are you all so willfully ignorant about the practical realities of democratization?

1. It doesn't matter who wins the election, because the majority of Electoral votes are not bound.

2. It doesn't matter who wins the election, because the changing of the President doesn't change the direction of U.S. Government policy in any meaningful way.

3. The empirical evidence indicates that voting is an insufficient check on government abuse of authority and power.

So, what reforms?

A full popular election?

How is that better for all of us?

With a full popular election, we would be able to go back in time and make Al Gore the president in 2000. Then we wouldn't still have George W. Bush ruining our lives today.

Oh, right ...

We could discuss how the popular vote did wondrous things in the 20th Century, though ...

And the only argument we have in support of it right now is, maybe W. wouldn't have been President.

Romney needs to win by at least the same margin that Obama did in 08. If he doesn't- or if it comes down to a small amount of votes in a single state that has any level of questionability in it's process- there will be civil discontent. In fact I will go as far as to say if Romney does not win the election clearly, because of the media narritive, there will be racially charged backlash.

For me, the best I can hope for is for the Libertarian party to meet the election requirements, and to split the vote enough that the Republicans and Democrats have to split the white house.

Redskins lost.

to... Carolina!

So does that mean the incumbent is going to be upset in a surprise win by someone that noone gave any chance to?

Well, the officials may have to go under the hood for a bit, but they only have two minutes to review the results of the polls.
