I wouldn't get too giddy (or stoned) until the Fed's decide they aren't going to prosecute people for growing and distributing.

Medical Marijuana has been 'legal' to consume in WA for some time (not sure exactly), but the shops that sell it keep getting shut down by the Feds.

It's going to be interesting...

States Rights died years ago, and they aren't coming back.

Ohio passed our ballot measure that allows everyone to fly by flapping really hard. Sadly the laws of gravity remain unchanged.

I think some of you are dismissing what is very noteworthy far too quickly. USA Today has a good article on it.

These victories likely represent the beginning of the end of marijuana prohibition in this country and many others as well. Just as the repeal of alcohol Prohibition began in the late 1920s with individual states repealing their own prohibition laws, and ultimately culminated with repeal of federal Prohibition, so Washington and Colorado have initiated a political process that will resonate nationally.

Just shoot the Feds when they come to take it. Seriously, do it enough time and they won't find enough Feds willing to do it and the life insurance costs in the department will edge them to do something else.

See, while that would work, it would rely on that being the standard response across most states, before the fed would get the point.

I suspect it will be legalized federally long before that becomes necessary.

By the same legislature that hasn't passed a BUDGET in 3 years?

It will take more states following Colorado and Washington's lead, that's for sure.

Yes, please don't make the mistake of thinking it's actually legal. Further, I'd hazard a guess that most employers aren't going to tolerate this for a while. Check your employment contract before your vacation in Colorado.

Just don't get busted by any federal agents and you'll be fine.

And why wouldn't employers tolerate it? They tolerate tobacco, pain pills, and alcohol just fine.

I find it sad that we refer to "recreational" use of marijuana. We never refer to getting hammered on alcohol as "recreational" use, nor do we have such a word reserved for cigarette smoking.

Because it's an illegal substance. Does your company have federal contracts?

Just figure it out before screwing up your career.

Well... It makes sense. There's medicinal uses of MJ, and none that I've heard of for the others. Since there's been a lot of recent medical MJ legalizations, you really do need to clarify.

Fair enough.

Also, we don't.

Only if you're already on the medicinal kind ;)

Actually, in Arizona (and states with medicinal marijuana laws, I assume), employers aren't tolerating marijuana because the Feds say no, but because the employment and disability insurers say no. At least that's what my best friend says whenever he talks about trying to hire new techs for his special systems company. He can't insure (much less bond) anyone with a positive UA, which has made finding employees a challenge for him. I also know that the Arizona State Nursing Board has revoked at least one RN license because of a positive THC test from someone with a Medical Marijuana card.

Maybe the insurers are saying no because of marijuana's Federal classification as an illegal narcotic, but I imagine it could also be because nobody wants any sort of mind-altering chemical involved in certain employment situations.

Huzzah! So glad Obama didn't give medical dispensaries in California 45 days to cease and desist before the DEA rolls in and clears them out!

They should really ensure people in those situations never drink alcohol then. From what I understand, the marijuana's effect on the mind is much less significant than that of alcohol.
