make me sad. fortunately my desktop still works. Hopefully I can convince Dell just to send me the hard drive rather than shipping the laptop off. However after the run around I got on my last call today, I don't feel overly compelled to call them tonight.

However I really wanted to sit on my couch tonight and do some writing. I can't do that without the laptop. Maybe I should throw slackware live on a USB Stick.

I say that only because I've discovered recently that I can't do creative writing on a computer. Probably due to my age, I find that I really need to write things out by hand. The thoughts don't flow the same way with a keyboard.

Sucks. My mom's HD in her laptop(2 years old!) just died. Tried to see if I could retrieve any info off of it and got the dreaded "tic, tic, tic" when I got it hooked up.

Sometimes, if you catch it early enuff, you can salvage data from a ticking drive. Pull it from the machine, stick it in an external USB enclosure, and throw it in the freezer while you're connected (to a laptop usually easiest, of course). If the failure's heat-related, you may have enough time to pull data.

I've had about a 2/3 success rate when doing this.

The ticking thing could be caused by different things. It's almost certainly an electronics issue (motor controller, etc...). If you can find an identical hard drive, you might be able to temporarily swap the electronics over and resurrect it.

I managed to do this on a recent failure I had. I was lucky enough to have purchased two of the same drives at the same time, and was able to salvage data by cannibalizing parts.

The freezer thing may or may not work (it's worth a try, just use a zip lock or something). It all depends on what the problem is. Just remember, as soon as it starts spinning, it's going to heat back up really fast.

The freezer trick has worked for me in the past.

Done this too. Had about a 50% success rate here.

I don't have anything that important on it. I put a new drive in and its ok. Also it wasn't ticking. It was completely no detected.
