So if I canceled my sub today I'd have preferred access? What would that prevent me from doing if I actually played.

I can't find the chart, but I'm pretty sure you would lose access to some character slots, and your cargo hold and inventory slots would be reduced. I think credits above 200k would go into escrow as well..

Again, I'm not positive about this, and I'm probably missing stuff...

I'll see if I can dig up the chart they put out when Free to Play launched...

Edit: And hotbars would go from six to four.

Here is their horrific attempt at explaining the various levels...

http://www.swtor.com/free/features

You'll probably have to visit the forums to find out what that actually means...

Edit: If you mouse over the quest icons it will give you the info you are looking for....

Heh, their F2P model doesn't have a lot of P in it. Nor really is there much F.

Its more P2W than F2P ;)

So...what's the cause for *****? You're used to paying for it. So what does it matter that some people are playing a gimped version of the game, since they're getting it for free?

Well, the point of F2P is to entice people to play the game and pay for things that = more than a regular sub.

Since the "good" part (and I use that term loosely) of TOR was the class stories, and they're giving that away free, I'm not sure where they thing they'll make their money.

I mean... more than 2 hotbars costs extra? Its almost like this F2P model was designed by Bothan Accountants.

Either way, it doesn't *really* affect me much, as TOR remains the only MMO that I bought, and didn't extend beyond the free month of play. I thought I may give it a shot again with it going F2P... but honestly, I can't be arsed.

The more people that play the better, but ulitimately, if they give too much away, the game will not generate enough revenue for further development.

Like Arafys said, the idea is to either encourage people to subscribe, or to encourage them to spend money in the market to enhance their free experience.

Free to Play players that don't contribute any money to the game, are mostly just a burden on resources. Especially if they are just solo players.

Here is an except from the dev live stream earlier today regarding Free to Play

Damion Schubert (Lead Designer), Jeff Hickman (Producer) wrote:
Q: Are there plans to open up F2P more? I've read complaints that it's way too restrictive.

A: Hickman: From a business standpoint, the number of players we're getting into the game is great. If you're a brand new player, it doesn't feel too limited because you don't know what it feels like to not be restricted. But we're definitely listening to feedback and could make changes. Schubert: We need to strike a design balance. We need the F2P to feel like they can play and enjoy the game. But we also need to make it feel like subscribers are getting their money's worth. We're watching it, we're making adjustments. We're allowing 6 character slots instead of 2. We're also giving out more quickbars based on player feedback.

/facepalm

The trick with F2P is to give your subscribers more than the base game. Vanity items, xp pots, mounts, etc. Not "Oh hey, I can have 2 more quickbar slots than you!"

I don't necessarily disagree, but returning players (Preferred Status) who have level 50 characters, as Kaffis pointed out, would find it pretty difficult to function with just two.

I have very little sympathy for this cause however. If you aren't willing to spend a two or five dollars to support the game, you probably should spend your time doing something else.

it's a fine balance between letting people return and play, to try to get them to re-subscribe, and turning them off completely.

The first weekend of Free to Play was supremely annoying. General chat on every planet was intolerable with people complaining that they didn't have access to something... The sense of entitlement thing just really bugs me. Developing video games isn't cheap. Especially not those that are heavily story based like this one. If they just give it away, I don't see how they will be able to continue to develop content.

I suppose that with the new expansion coming out, they will probably restrict access to that (I certainly hope) to paying subscribers...

I have six level 50 characters now, and have just finally started doing some of end game stuff on a few of them. I still have a lot of see in these end game flashpoints and operations, and I hope they continue to add more content, especially story based content. So far, much of what they have added so far has been PvP warzones, which I have near zero interest in. I just hope that the cash flow they get with the Free to Play stuff will allow them to (re-)hire voice actors and add to the existing stories. All of my level 50 characters log in screens show 'Interlude - To Be Continued' type stuff.. I can only hope it does...
