Sister, 19, accidentally shoots dead brother in the head while posing with gun for Facebook picture

A 19-year-old woman accidentally shot dead her brother while posing with a gun for Facebook photos on New Year's Eve.
Manuel Ortiz died instantly after being shot in the head at about 6am on Monday morning.
Family and friends wept as his body was carried from his apartment in Phoenix, Arizona, where the shooting took place.
Police said 22-year-old Ortiz and his sister Savannah Ramirez arrived back at the home they shared on New Year’s Eve after spending the night drinking.

They were with two other people when someone in the group pulled out the handgun to take photos with it.
As the 19-year-old posed and played around with the weapon it went off striking Ortiz in the head, according to ABC15.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
It is not known if the group knew the handgun was loaded.

Police say she has been questioned and released pending further investigation in the case.
Phoenix Police Sgt Steve Martos said the victim's sister would likely be charged with manslaughter if tests conclude she had alcohol in her system.
'Every New Year's Eve, this particular sister is going to be thinking about this for the rest of her life on how...drinking overnight, playing with a gun and now shoots and kills her brother,' said Phoenix Police Sgt Steve Martos.

Friends said the shooting was a terrible accident.
One friend who wanted to remain anonymous said she wanted to remember Ortiz as a 'kind, funny guy he was'.
'He was a very close friend to everybody. He was just always there and it's sad because one second he's here and the other he's not.'
'Every time he saw somebody sad or down he would be right there making jokes so you could be happy. Even if he was just having a hard time he was always there for someone,' said the friend.
Authorities are looking into who owns the gun.
On both Manuel and his sister's Facebook pages there are numerous shots of them posing with guns and making gang symbols.

So much stupid. People who have no respect for guns have no business even being in the same room with one.

What a horrible price to be paid to learn such a lesson.

First rule of gun safety - Always assume they are loaded until proven otherwise.

Somewhere near the top - Never give a drunk person a gun. The life you save may be your own.

So...that begs the question:
You responsible gun owners - what do you do with your gun if you're drinking (and therefore automatically irresponsible until the alcohol leaves your bloodstream)?

Its simple. Don't carry if you're drinking. Or on drugs. Or in any other way impaired.

I don't handle a weapon unless I'm sober enough to drive. A gun is a much less complicated piece of machinery than a car. I cannot carry concealed because my state essentially doesn't allow CC permits to be issued to civs. If I did carry, I would probably remained armed but there is very little use in having a gun if even slightly intoxicated; it's hard enough to shoot and use it to defend your life sober. I can't imagine it being very effective in the hands of a drunk.

Well, that's an interesting question seeing as how I don't drink. The other two gun owners that I personally know do drink, but not to any great excess. To my knowledge, my father has never been intoxicated in my lifetime. If he has, it was while playing darts at a tavern, while his firearms were either at his house, or at his parents' farm where said firearms are used.

In Ohio, unless I want to commit a felony, I can't carry into any business that serves alcohol for on-premises consumption (bar, restaurant, etc.). Therefore, it stays in the car.

At home, I don't get the gun out unless I'm cleaning it, installing accessories, taking it to the range, or actively doing something with it that doesn't include taking dumbass pictures.

alcohol and firearms don't mix.
If I go to a restaurant that allows fire arms by law I'm not allowed to drink.
Bars are by law no weapons allowed.
Home/friends common sense put the guns away.
Granted it's not uncommon to pop a beer when I get home before I've disarmed.
But drunk with gun I'd have to deal with my wife.
Guns are tools, not something that need to be shown off or bragged about it.

You lock it up, and don't get it out. Having had a few drinks does not magically remove your ability to know you shouldn't be handling the gun, any more than it makes you magically unable to realize you shouldn't drive.

One or two drinks don't make you too irresponsible to handle a gun, either, any more than they make you too drunk to drive, but you just shouldn't do it. It's better to take away all chance of an accident.

When I'm out drinking, I don't drive. Given that, I don't have a place to secure it, so it stays home.

My rifle stays in the bedroom closet in it's case, unloaded, until such time as hubby gets drunk and decides to clean it, then hears a noise and loads it. Once he passes out I take it, unload it, and put it away again. I really need to get a better storage place for it. Thankfully, we don't have any handguns...yet.

(He does know how to handle a weapon, he was a Marine in Viet Nam...but he is also an alcoholic :()

No? Just me wondering why shooting an already dead person made the news? Ok then. Move along.

I read it that way and ignored the rest of the thread, wondering why there were so many comments. Now I understand.

Reminds me of a headline blooper I saw once, from way back: "Police Suspect Foul Play in Death of Man Found Bound and Hanged".

Id like to see how these deaths get recorded. As firearm death? Accidential? Alcohol related? All three?

They should have a category for "dumb **** removing themselves from the genepool while trying to be 'cool'"

If they did that, do you realize how low the gun death numbers would likely be?

It'll end up recorded as a firearm death. We have to boost the numbers. In 2011, firearms were behind hammers for total kills.

Well ya know.... Sometimes a muthafukka just needs to die... And all you have access to is a tool box. A screwdriver is like a shiv, who remembers that? Hit a dude with a hammer: people will remember you...
