Not sure where I remember this from but the details of the story that I remember are as follows:

Future society that determines your end of life date with a tattoo on your arm.
To earn more "time" before being classified as "expired" you could hunt someone with a later tattoo, cut off their arm and turn it in for credit.
Boy who was on this hunt found a man living as a hermit on the outskirts of society who was MANY years past expired.
Man was an accomplished piano player (the boy had never heard such beautiful sounds)
Boy was discovered by man who knew why the boy was there and offered his arm so the boy could live on.
Boy realized that in taking his arm, the man could no longer play the piano as beautifully.
Boy stayed with man, thus marking himself as expired.

Any ideas? Short story name? Anyone ever read that story? Anything?

Thanks

I have no idea but that's an interesting-sounding story.

Sounds vaguely Vonnegut-ish, but if so it's not one I've ever read, sorry.

Sounded vaguely like the plot of the movie "In Time" so I decided to see if it was based on some book. It wasn't (officially), but Harlan Ellison seemed to think it bore a giant resemblence to his short story: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%22Repent, ... icktockman

Enough of a resemblance to initiate a lawsuit. Is that what you were looking for?

I've read it, and it's not what Foamy's describing.

Definitely not 'In Time,' either. Not the right plot and not nearly enough terrible-yet-hilarious "time"-based puns.
