What was most amazing to me about this, is the patience and docility of the dolphin. It's a 300-400 lb animal, likely, that could have **** those divers up even unintentionally by thrashing around, etc. Instead, he sat there, nearly still, while they worked on him.

The only thing that can overcome fear is intelligence.

Dolphins definitely know what a human is.

Yeah, but humans are unpredictable and occasionally dangerous. You should always remember, humans are wild animals, and can never be fully domesticated.

Dolphins are smart enough that there's currently a lot of debate on whether or not we should even hold them in captivity.

I read a pretty compelling article last year on the subject of dolphins, here -> http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-17116882

Check out the 4 bullet points about halfway through the article providing evidence of their intelligence. This one in particular made my jaw drop:
"A number of captive dolphins were rewarded with fish in return for tidying up their tank. One of them ripped up a large paper bag, hid away the pieces, and presented them one at a time to get multiple rewards." (I've known many humans who wouldn't have thought of doing that)

Cool story.

Dolphins often come to check out what I am doing when sailing. They surf up and rotate so they can look right at me. They like it when the boat is moving at 5 or more knots. The one who decide to go nudging my rudder was unnerving though.

I have also seen them surf the bow wave of big ships. Usually they fly up and out , then roll onto their backs before hitting the water again.

A somewhat tongue-in-cheek comment, but the fact remains, we still, as a species, still slaughter cetaceans. I'm surprised they don't fear us more.

Perhaps dolphin philosophers and scientists have recognized the potential for complex dolphin-like intelligence in humans, and they're now attempting peace talks.

Maybe since they were doing a pretty good job of whole-sale slaughter, there aren't any left to tell the tale.

We don't do it "as a species".

Dolphins have their own "Dark Side" (apparently).
