I live at the end of a dead-end street. As such, it's usually one of the last streets plowed. We've had about 15 inches of snow overnight and its still falling. That just happens once in a while here, we live with it.

So this idiot across the street from me tries to get out to work in her little tiny Chevrolet piece of crap with no snow tires.

I don't know how many of you have lived in a snowy area in the winter, but "All-season Tires" are not. If you don't get snow-tires up here, you're an idiot. You're a bigger idiot if you block the street for 2 hours trying to get to work in your tiny car and all-season tires when the snow is up to your car's bumper. Stay home and wait for the snow plow to clear the street, you idiot!

And I'm too tiny to help by pushing, don't ask.

(Note that my Mazda5 with snow tires got up the street with only a small amount of rocking for momentum at the beginning.)

And you have just explained why I live in the flatlands where.snow is something we can go visit occasionally. I can drive in snow. I choose not to whenever I can avoid it. Otherwise I'd be more seriously considering retiring in Reno where a bunch of my good friends live.

All-season tires mean "equally shitty in all seasons."

I used to live on a dead-end in Ohio. People did the same dumb **** there, and that street almost never got plowed. You could, however, go on the main road and find a bumper crop of fools who forgot how to drive in the snow from the previous year.

Technically Canada is so far North that it is South.

If you go due east of Green Bay, Wisconsin, and cross Lake Michigan, Michigan State, and Lake Huron, you'll cross north of where I live. I'm not THAT far north. This part of Ontario is stuffed in between southern Michigan and NY state. The southernmost point of Ontario, Pelee Island, in Lake Erie, is at a lattitude of 41'77"N. It's fairly close to Toledo and Cleveland. The northern border of California, Utah, and Nevada is 42'00"N. That gives you an idea of how far south Ontario plunges.

Now, if only we got north California weather...

I'd never heard that expression, but thanks to Wiki and James K. Polk I, now I know where the 80's alternative rock band 54-40 got their name from.

Go ahead, break off from Canada and petition for Statehood. We have cookies.

A part of Talya's province is actually South of the Border.

Sarnia and Windsor

So as much as some of us call Canada "America's Attic," it could also be called the basement. :D

Oh, and I'm a native Floridian - used to their license plates and how they talk. Plus, our dog's a hoser. We got her from a Red Lab breeder just outside of Windsor.

And if you look due south of Leamington, you'll see the shark-egg sac that's Pelee Island. I took my wife & kids there one weekend in October. We headed back by Sat. afternoon. Not a lot to do on the island when the water's cold and algae-filled, apparently. Plus, I think it was the off-season.

I'm trying to figure out if this is (a) A function of less history and such being taught these days, or (b) Canadian government ideology (like that whole Civil War thing in the U.S. South).

Try living in Moscow. I spent three winters there, it's brutal. Now we're talking North - like, Hudson Bay north.

I'm 39 years old, so "these days" is relative. Truth be told, our history classes never covered much about America... just the Revolution and 1812, really. We got a little bit of the US Civil War, but remember, you're just another country. How much Canadian history do they teach you? What about French, Dutch, Portugal, Brazil, Mexico, yada yada yada. Not to mention I dropped History after Grade 9, being rather bored with it at the time. (Far more interest now than then.)

39? Hah, you young thang, you. You dropped History? You could do that? The only choices I had in high school, back in the dark ages, was art or language. And a wide choice of languages, so long as it was French (which I now regret not taking).

I'm a history geek, so I know quite a bit about your fair country, but that's probably just me being me.

History was only mandatory as far as grade 9. I considered taking grade 11 ancient civs, but had no room.

I beg to differ with you, young whippersnapper! Sunshine, blue skies, and 60 degrees here today. :)

60's not terrible. It was 59 here about three weeks ago (I think that was a record for January.) Then it was -18 less than a week later. Then it was back up to 55 the next week. Now it's in the 20's.

My preference is 80+, sitting on the deck, drinking fancy cocktails.

I know plenty about Canada: Rush, Barenaked Ladies, poutine (blech), One of the best Chinese buffets in the region, Relative Insanity (tho I might try it some day).

Ok, so there's not much (any) history there. Like I said, I'm a Floridian (living in metro Detroit). Historically, Canadians lived in our trailer parks and condos in the winter.

Another cold (for us) winter storm moving through - it got down to 41 degrees overnight on our balcony. Hail in a few places, and someone who stopped by this morning said that she had frost on her windshield. She was completely stumped as to what to do. :D
