Hehehe. I giggled at the way I parsed this instinctively. Because, you know, if the answer to "How many of its online functions will work?" isn't "All of them." you've pretty much failed at design, right?

I guess I missed the part where they said that you needed to throw away your PS2/3 before buying a PS4.

At Sony’s interminable live conference revealing the PS4, it was announced that it’s built on an x86 CPU, includes an “enhanced PC GPU”, along with a local hard drive (although no mention of SSD). And it comes with 8GB of GDDR5 memory. Also announced are other features that have that nagging sense of familiarity, including live streaming of games, and the ability to stream yourself playing games. It’s a PC!

So, we say welcome Sony! Glad you’ve decided to join us.

Not having backwards compatibility is dumb, especially when this thing is BASICALLY a PC.... Admittedly, I can just emulate PS1/PS2...

The PS4 is going to be able to stream PS1/2/3 games. Who knows, maybe Sony will have a program to allow you to stream them if you own the disc. The details aren't all out yet.

I think it's a function of how unrealistically ambitious they seem to be. Suggesting that you can play any game from any playstation system on it, and stream them to play remotely, while being able to purchase a game online and play it instantly while it's still downloading. Yeah, I'm pretty skeptical it'll all work right out the gate.

They're watching Nintendo walk away the nostalgia money from their old games on the online store and they want a piece of that.

I just watched a video recap of this announcement.

Color me underwhelmed.

Sony is going to have to give me more that streaming games (whatever that means exactly) and Netflix to get me on to this platform.

At this point I'd buy and XBox 360 over a PS4 (knowing what we know so far).

I'm still waiting for Ouya or did that go belly up? I've always been a person to play whatever games are available to me on whatever systems I have for the most part. I've bought a pc and a tablet within the last year and they seem to be the main share of my gaming. I haven't bought a wii game (new, VC, or used) since Skyward Sword. I borrowed 9 Doors 9 Persons 9 Hours (if you've never heard of it, fix that) from Grouse recently, but my DS has seen less play time than my Wii. So I find myself wondering (for me anyway) if the console wars are over and the winner is None of the above.

OUYA is launching in June. You can now order them on Amazon.

I've got a Kickstarter special edition model coming that's supposed to be delivered next month.

I'm still waiting until I hear of one being in someone's hands. So let me know how yours works out when you get it.

Will do.

If it helps, devs already have them.

The chances of this being a hoax or something happening to the company before launch is going down quickly. However I'm personally still content to wait until they show up in consumers hands and I hear what they have to say about it before I buy one, even if it means I don't get one on day one. I've never pre ordered a piece of hardware before. I do appreciate you taking the risk on my behalf though.

So, some of the rumors have been dispelled - Sony confirmed that the PS4 will do nothing to block the use of used games, and won't require an "always-on" connection.

Also interesting is that the next Xbox and PS4 are using so many similar components - the same basic CPU, GPU (though the PS4 version is a bit beefier), and 8gb of unified RAM (GDDR5 in the PS4 and DDR3 in the next Xbox), etc.

So most of the 3rd party games will likely be on both systems since porting between them will be very simple compared to the current generation.

Really? You have a component announcement for the next XBox? That's news to the rest of us; care to share it? We already know you're disproportionately biased toward Sony products, Coren.

Expected ad hominem aside, http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/df-ha ... o-vs-orbis

(main change being that the PS4 went up from 4gb GDDR5 to 8gb compared to the dev kits.)

So you actually don't have any definitive hardware specs from Microsoft, just speculation from a website based on the questionable assertions of a supposedly rogue Australian developer who sold his "Durango Dev Kit" on Ebay. And there's no ad hominem; you are disproportionately biased toward Sony products, as evidenced further by your previous post.

That info has come from many sources.

And repeating the ad hominem doesn't make it less of one.

A statement of truth is not an ad hominem, Coren. It's simply a statement of your bias. I would have to be deliberately impugning your character, as opposed to your credibility to speak on this subject as evidenced by past behavior and current argumentation.

Do you have a definitive hardware statement from Microsoft? Or, as I have noted, is your only evidence the assertions of specs by a supposed "rogue developer" in Australia?

You're making assumptions based on information that is neither available nor verifiable. You are likewise accusing me of logical fallacies in an attempt to "poison the well," rather than admit that your brand bias is coloring your statements in this thread.

So, let me explain how an ad hominem works.

1. I'm not attacking you, I'm stating a demonstrable fact based on posting history.

2. It does invalidate your credibility to speak, especially since your own evidence is a contested, unverifiable statement from a questionable source.

Coren, you yourself noted how the hardware sony announced is different (improved) over the dev kits.

Even if the report(s) are true, there is every reason to believe the specs will change before launch.

Yes you are, with an ad hominem.

No you're not.

No it doesn't.

Multiple sources have agreed that those specs are what Microsoft has been going with. They're also the same sources that accurately described what was in the Sony dev kits. If those sources had said that Microsoft was going with something involving better specs than the PS4, I would have reported that instead.

Meanwhile, you're claiming you're not making an ad hominem...by elaborating on your ad hominem.

Yep, and if there's a report that Microsoft has changed their hardware compared to already known specs, we can discuss those.

How about we don't, lets just stop comparing specs until the official announcement?

Fair enough. Other places are having quite lively discussions on the topic, I'll stick to those.
