^ This. If the console materializes as anything near what it is being touted as I would buy it just to stream Pandora on my TV if it were going to be released at $99. But if the $99 is the special intro-price for kickstarters (or apparently $140 now) then the retail mark-up would put it around Xbox pricing in which case what is the point of the console?

No, I'm paying an extra $40 for the LE brown version. They've said specifically that the console is intended to be low-priced ($99).

It's only an assumption that the final price wouldn't be $99; but I expect it will be.

I'm definitely in 'wait and see' on this.

I honestly don't see anything that is going to appeal to the masses with this (other than the $99 price, if that holds).

I think it has a good chance to serve a niche market (including me, if the XBMC functionality is done well).

Were they verbally abused by children on a bus?

Successfully funded. Topped $8.5 million.

Hey, Kickstarter, when I put this short film I'm planning on there, remember that generosity. :P

With the Kickstarter finished, you can now preorder an Ouya for $109 with one controller.

In related news, ARS is reporting that OnLive has fired their entire staff...

Update says half the staff got laid off and that they're being bought out by an unnamed company. Must have been hard to manage a $5M/month operating cost when you sell your consoles for $99 and offer your app for free.

Here is a little more info.

Still not terribly clear what the future holds for this service...

Onlive is just a service available on Ouya right? They are separate companies? Other developers and apps will remain available?

Sorry in advance but their official website contains... 0 information: http://www.ouya.tv/ or I wouldn't be asking.

Haha... OnLive has been around for a couple of years and they're a completely separate cloud-based gaming service.

Hmm. It looks like OUYA may have Nintendo emulators available at launch. Neat.

Hawt. However I really want to go to Chicago and tour Pacific Garden Missions this spring, so a console purchase might be out of reach for a while.

That's a pretty big list to scrounge up six titles (or franchises) I've actually heard of. Still gonna have to wait and see.

Only one of the games I play or would have an interest in playing on mobile devices (since, you know, it's a modified Android system) is showing up. Good for The Banner Saga, though.

I have avoided posting any reviews because the versions that have shipped already are pre-release dev units. Retail launch isn't for another two months, plenty of time for interface tweaking and game publishing.

Eh. What console launches with a decent library? Or even a single decent game nowadays? Hell, the entirety of the Xbox library (even by the time of the console's death) was Halo and Halo 2. Without them, there would never have been an Xbox 360. Also, there was the Duke. So...yeah. Don't tell me that post-release revisions aren't possible.

I don't know what people are expecting out of a $99 console. I don't even know what I'm expecting out of a $99 console. That's part of why I bought one: to see what a $99 console would get me (much like why I bought each of the budget tablets, the Kindle Fire and Google Nexus 7). I like what Ouya represents (a possibility of an alternative to the Microsoft/Nintendo/Sony stranglehold on gaming), and I was more than willing to plunk down $100 to A) support that, and B) sate my gadget-lust curiosity.

Yeah, there's a lot of Android cruft available right now. There's a lot of Android cruft in general. The game selection will get better, the app selection will get better, and the UI will get better. That's how these things work. I wish it weren't (I sound old-fashioned, but I miss the days when software shipped whole, rather than rushing a piece of crap out the door and patching it later), but I also recognize the upside to that: problems can be fixed.

The bottom line is that it's $100. I'm unsurprised at a poor review; much like House of Cards' premiere on Netflix, it represents a threat to the established order of things, and that's terrifying to a lot of people. That's not at all to say that the console isn't a piece of ****; it may very well be. But I also read reviews like that from The Verge with a healthy dose of skepticism.

Reading The Verge’s review of the OUYA hardware is an interesting exercise. The OUYA is a combination of the hardware that plays the games, and the software that allows us to download, pay for, and buy those games. The Verge isn’t very impressed with the OUYA experience right now, and I can hardly blame them, but I also don’t think their review tells the entire story.

I have an OUYA dev kit at home, and I’ve been playing with it for the past few days. The whole thing kind of sucks right now, but that’s okay.
