Apparently House of Cards was encouraging enough that Netflix has lined up JMS and the Wachowskis to do a series called Sense8.
Debuts late 2014

This is what stumps me about House of Cards - Can Netflix show that their subscriptions actually increased because of it? Sure, we watched it ... but we already subscribe. And, I would think that most people who watched it also were already subscribers.

And, couldn't people just get the free 30-day trial to watch it, and then bail? (Or do they not offer that anymore?)

It's also very funny to think that 15 years ago, JMS was just another TV writer who, through force of will, pushed through a concept for a complete, 5-year sci fi series (that actually wasn't all that well received). Now, he's a household name so much that we can just use his initials, and we know who we're referring to.

I wouldn't say JMS is a household name...he's recognizable on geek forums, but that's about it.

That said, I'm excited to see what comes out of this. Netflix's slate of original series continues to intrigue. House of Cards was phenomenal, Hemlock Grove looks like trashy horror fun, Arrested Development is, well, Arrested Development, and now this. It sounds great.

J. Michael Straczynski. Wrote/masterminded Babylon 5, along with a bunch of other stuff. Proficient in comic writing as well. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/J._Michael_Straczynski

Interesting. Never heard of him.

Thanks (thanks also for helping with the whole "not really a household name" side point I was trying to make).

OK, I guess my B5 geekness got out of control. I've just seen his name all over lately, figured everyone knew who he was.

His biggest thing before B5? Murder, She Wrote.

That being said ... Are these series actually helping the Netflix bottom line, as in increased subscribers due to folks wanting to watch the series?

I know, I could look it up, but it's more fun to ask you guys.

If it helps, I knew exactly who was being talked about when the letters "JMS" came up and I've never gotten through an entire episode of Babylon 5. I knew he worked on it, but I also knew him for his comics endeavours.

Speaking of streaming series exclusives, I saw an ad for Hulu's "The Yard." And it looks, as they say in spanish, terrible.

I kept thinking "Jace, the Mind Sculpter". My nerd cred is still intact.
