Yeah, that sounds about right.

I have a PS Vita and a 3DS XL. I don't actually own any games for the Vita, and only one for the 3DS. Both of those systems cost far more than the OUYA, and I'm willing to wager that their games cost far more than the typical OUYA game will. The criticisms of the hardware and software are fair. The vitriol I've seen spewed toward the OUYA isn't, and is most likely coming from standard "old guard" mouthpieces or Microsoft/Nintendo/Sony fanboys.

Sony isn't releasing a next-generation console, they're releasing their own Ouya clone at four or five times the price-point, with an inferior marketplace and delivery system, and hold-outs who still believe in cloud or distributed game processing.

I don't know if I should laugh at that post or give it a real response. PS4 is a clone of Ouya? Give me a break. Not a next-generation console? LOL. People are dumb for believing in cloud computing? It's a FANTASTIC option for anything other than twitch reflex gaming.

I guess that ended up a little of both.

Have you even looked at the "released"/"leaked" specs on the PS4?

Wouldn't you agree that twitch/reflex games make up most of the console titles? I think Khross' final point is a valid concern in that regard.

You are aware that the PS4 has less floating point performance and smaller CPU throughput than the PS3? Not a next-generation console. It doesn't matter how much memory or how big a Radeon GPU they throw at the device; the performance limiting component is inferior to the current generation's offering. If you're Sony, this means your console is going backwards. They wanted a cloud-based gaming platform and network to emerge with the PS3. It was the entire public-facing premise behind the CELL and the absurd amounts of R&D Sony paid IBM and Toshiba. It was supposed to develop into an architectural family that Sony based its networked, cloud-synced, distributed processing devices. That didn't happen.

And now Sony wants a broad based, provider handled cloud-processing infrastructure to make up for the fact that they are going to put less hardware than a Surface Pro has in their next console.

I've played plenty of games using streaming services and the only ones that didn't work perfectly were fighting games like Street Fighter. FPS, RTS, action RPG, I've done them all and had no problems.

Have you seen the specs on the Ouya? Nvidia Tegra 3, 1GB RAM, 8GB storage. My cell phone has comparable specs.

I have, and I'm aware. Your phone does have comparable specs; so does mine. The PS4, however, has to compete with a PC while being your phone with 8 gigs of ram.

Too much hyperbole, Khross. You're saying **** that just flat out is not true. The PS4 is next generation, you don't get to decide what that means. It is NOT a clone of the Ouya, they both serve completely different purposes and will have completely different experiences. The PS4 is going to be much more powerful than both the Surface Pro and Ouya. An 8-core, x86 architecture CPU that developers are excited about instead of the retardation that was CELL; a 1.85 TFLOP GPU; 4-8GB GDDR5 memory; a HDD that is likely to be in the neighborhood of 1TB. These are numbers that you can't refute. The PS3/360's graphical abilities are not limited by their floating point computations, their biggest limiting factors are RAM.

Lenas:

AMD's Jaguar line of CPUs are embedded platform CPUs developed from the Bobcat family. They are ultrabook/tablet processors; and they are bad ultrabook/tablet processors. The floating point performance AMD's quoting comes from the fact that the Jaguar has an integrated 7850 level GPU core; except that 1.84 TFlops is behind the CELL without a GPU attached and well behind the CELL/RSX combination. The PS4 is, at best, a smartphone writ-large.

To be honest, I'm not hopeful for Microsoft's offering either; since they're headed decidedly in the set-top box and content delivery device direction, too. Not a content 'playing' device. The PS4, however, is going to have huge issues keeping up with performance demands, especially with shared memory and a glorious lack of access to nVidia's memory controllers.

OUYA HOLDING PUBLIC E3 BOOTH IN PARKING LOT
Stew Shearer | 20 May 2013 6:56 am

Ouya will be holding a three day event showcasing the work of its developers in a parking lot across from the Los Angeles Convention Center.

One of the biggest goals Ouya's creators have had for the Android-based console is that it would a platform open to the whims of its users. When its Kickstarter first launched, it was promised the console would be completely hackable. Likewise, every Ouya comes with development tools to give gamers the option to create their own software. Just in the run up to Ouya's release, more than 10,000 developers, both big and small, have taken the company up on offers of free development tools.

With E3 on the horizon, Ouya's creators are still dedicated to this mantra of open-ness. In an attempt to circumvent the industry-only nature of E3, Ouya's booth will be located outside of the main show in a parking lot directly across from the Los Angeles Convention Center. In an email sent to the many developers working on games for the console, the company offered any interested parties a chance to join it at its "booth" which will be open to industry professionals and the public alike.

"OUYA will be present for all three days of the event, and we'll provide everything you'll need to put on a killer game demo," said Kellee Santiago, Head of Developer Relation's for Ouya. "You'll be able to demo your games to media, E3 attendees and random people on the street who want to see what all the buzz is about. We're going all out to ensure we get the best equipment, and we're also engineering it with the elements of an outside location in mind." Developers interested in showcasing their work at Ouya's public booth are being asked to register before May 28th. We can only imagine the company is hoping not all 10,000 of its developers will attend.

While it would be easy to laugh this off as just being the indie-console being all quirky and loveable, Ouya is not the first hardware maker in 2013 to eschew the standard E3 experience for plans of its own. Nintendo this year will be skipping its usual press conference, and will also be giving gamers a similarly public chance to try in-the-works games by releasing playable versions to Best Buys. Meanwhile, while both still have plans for E3 presentations, Sony revealed the PS4 at an event in February while Microsoft is holding a private show tomorrow to showcase the Xbox 360's successor.

The OUYA is the answer to a question no one was asking.

Hrm. Apparently my OUYA arrived on Thursday, but I've been in Nashville since Wednesday morning for a convention. Maybe I can muck about with this when I get home.

It's about what I figured. A cute little toy, right now; it has to get some good games on it to make it viable.

Build-wise, it's attractive (particularly the bronze SE version), but the controller feels cheap (buttons are squishy, particularly the d-pad, and the triggers squeak). Having a touchscreen on the controller is completely silly, as it doesn't seem to actually do anything but throw up a mouse cursor on the screen for a minute. It doesn't appear to be able to power up or down via the controller, which is a seriously dumb oversight that I assume can be rectified with a firmware update. Following the pattern of literally every Android device I've owned, the first time I booted it up saw the machine freeze and require a hard shutdown and restart.

Demos loaded onto the device quickly, but browsing the store is sluggish and cumbersome. The UI is half good-looking and bespoke, half unvarnished Android.

Games seemed to play OK...except for the ones that didn't. Which I attribute to the developer, not the console, but it's still a concern. I believe the OUYA can make a go of it, and the whole reason I threw a little money at it was to support the idea behind it, but they're going to need to quickly grow their store offerings into iOS-level quality in order to compete.

I 100% agree. Thanks for the good review.

I have a buddy that is working on developing an Android game and he absolutely loves the Ouya for that purpose. As to a normal user wanting a gaming experience, I can't speak to that.

I just wanted to point out that Wizorb is on the Ouya release list. If any of you kick-starter people missed/ignored me raving about this game last year, here is your chance to try again.

This probably doesn't warrant it's own thread, so I'll toss it here.

Nvidia's Android based gaming platform gets a June release date and a $300 price tag.

Stock jelly bean for an OS, so maybe a little more 'open' than Ouya.

To be fair, it's a mobile device rather than a plug-into-your-TV one, so I don't know if they're really competitors in that regard. On the other hand, that puts it up against a 3DS at an unfavorable price point, too. *shrug*

It can also stream some games from your desktop PC to the device.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nvidia_Shield

I'm not even remotely interested in owning one, and I'm not trying to convince anyone it's better (or even comparable to) the Ouya, I just though folks here might find it interesting...

The console allows for the streaming of games running on a compatible desktop or laptop PC.This function allows certain Windows games to be played via the SHIELD and is similar to Sony's Remote Play.
