I certainly don't know much about the economics involved with backwards compatibility.

I do know that when Win Vista and later, Win 7 came out, many older, but still functional/useful devices would not work. This was presumably because they would rather you buy a new printer than them having to support the old one.

Why are games any different? Why wouldn't the onus be on the game developer to make their older games compatible with newer consoles?

How is a developer going to make a game compatible for a console that won't exist for several years?

1. Hardware =? software
2. You're talking about a very small window of devices, but yes they do exist.
3. Supposedly because they are competing for my hardware dollars with a PC where I can still run Ultima 4 with a little tweaking.

I don't need a new xbox to play my 360 games. My 360 works just fine.

They didn't start out with accounts attached to searches, and when they introduced it, they made it very clear that you could opt-out. I don't think they've ever saved IPs (though they might read them at the time to do some geographic aggregation).

I'm all for being aware of what information you're giving away to folks, Google included, but get your facts straight when you do.

While a game console can certainly benefit from an "always on" connection, having it as a requirement is still ridiculous. You're telling me they can't provide the exact same service if my console isn't connected to the internet 100% of the time? Also, there's now rumblings that the box will "stop working" if it's disconnected for more than 3 minutes. That's insanity. "Oh, I'm going to move and my internet won't be installed for a week. Maybe I'll pass the time with this xbox that is now unplayable." "Oh, we're going to head out to a cabin and take along the xbox and some games to play. Oh, wait, I guess the cabin won't have broadband." "Oh, I'm going to go to my grandma's over christmas and I'll bring my xbox to play. Oh wait, nana doesn't have broadband." A big benefit of a console is that it's portable, and multiplayer. Hell, I've taken a road trip where we played rock band in the back of a van for a day. It was excellent. If they persist with this crap, and the PS4 DOESN'T require an always-on connection, I guess Sony has their new advertising tagline.

It seems obvious that they haven't learned anything from all the SimCity bullshit, and the only logical reason I can think of for a REQUIRED always-on connection is DRM. No more people modding their xboxes, no more copied games. Was that really a big enough problem to absolutely CRIPPLE the hell out of their platform?

For all we know it could be a 5kb transfer every 5 minutes. No big deal, just tether your cellphone.

Rumored to be running on Windows 8 now.

It's the only logical way to move forward. They have already made steps to unify Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8, now it's time to bring Xbox into the fold by putting Windows 8 RT into every box.

I think I am ok with Xbox running it. Just not laptops and desktops.

The Xbox UI is similar enough to RT that it will be fine for it. It's an ideal platform for that OS/UI.

Official annoucement scheduled for May 21.

After weeks of rumor and speculation, Microsoft has confirmed that it will be holding an event on Tuesday, May 21st at 10am PST to unveil its next-generation Xbox, commonly referred to as Durango or Xbox 720. The event will take place at the company's Redmond, Washington campus.

Meanwhile, according to ARS Technica, the device will not require Internet connectivity for things that shouldn't need it.

Should single-player games, Blu-ray playback, and live TV viewing be possible on a gaming console with no Internet connection? Most gamers would say "yes," but they have been worried that Microsoft feels differently; the next generation Xbox has been consistently rumored to require a permanent network connection.

It won't.

According to an internal Microsoft e-mail sent to all full-time employees working on the next Xbox, "Durango [the codename for the next Xbox] is designed to deliver the future of entertainment while engineered to be tolerant of today's Internet." It continues, "There are a number of scenarios that our users expect to work without an Internet connection, and those should 'just work' regardless of their current connection status. Those include, but are not limited to: playing a Blu-ray disc, watching live TV, and yes playing a single player game."

The quotation also implicitly confirms another rumor: the next Xbox will sport an HDMI input, to allow cable boxes to be hooked up for live TV viewing. Our sources tell us that the console will be able to provide TV listings and similar information.

How far this offline support will extend still isn't clear. It could take the form of a fully offline mode akin to that on the Xbox 360 (insert optical disc, install game, play, all without an Internet connection) or it could be more like Steam (install and activate online but enable subsequent offline play once this has been done).

While one could argue that "installing a game" is one of the "scenarios" that gamers "expect to work" when offline, a more Steam-like approach would be consistent with rumors that the next Xbox will use its Internet connection to block installation of secondhand games.

Still, though the next Xbox won't make everybody happy, it looks like fears that the console will be useless when your broadband goes down have been overblown.

Word on the street is that Durango will be launched as the Xbox "Fusion" or "Infinity".

Well, here's hoping you can buy the card and then buy the Live subscription like Kaffis and I do. Since we don't want to store a credit card with Microsoft.

Tom's has an interesting write-up in advance of the big Xbox Infinity reveal tomorrow.
Link: http://www.tomshardware.com/news/Cloud- ... 22666.html

Here is a snippet to pique your interest...
TomsHardware.com wrote:
According to several sources, Xbox Infinity will establish a connection to Microsoft's own farm of game streaming servers, thus providing a smooth high-definition experience similar to what OnLive offers customers and monthly subscribers. This will also allow the new console to play games based on the Xbox 360 and the original console without the need for additional, costly embedded hardware.

Meh, exactly what the PS4 is doing and something that's to be expected.

Not just what the PS 4 is doing, but what the PS 4 is doing and for which the Xbox boosters on the board berated it intensely.

Excellent article (from the former head of EA, no less) on some good ideas for the PS4 and the Xbox 3.

Is their any evidence that either one of them plan on doing any of that?
