And I'd be fine with that if we had the traffic in this thread to support splitting it, but I don't think we do.

I can recognize that my level of butt-hurt for GoT spoilers is probably increased because my wife has managed to ruin at least one part of each season so far by "accidentally" saying something and an ******* on another board PM'd me a huge spoiler on purpose. Don't mind me.

Me too. Also the Queen of Thorns was awesome. I do wish that they hadn't made it look like Jamie easily lost the fight with Brienne. That weakens him too much IMO.

The fight was over far too soon. In the book it was a lot longer, they were going at it for awhile when they were captured.

Also...

Spoiler:
Will they take his hand in the show?

Edit: Ooops, I hit the wrong tag...sorry folks.

In response to your spoilered question, Raell, "um, they'd better."

I couldn't watch this show without spoilers. I don't want to get emotionally invested in a character that gets gutted for no apparent reason than shock value.

Can't help it at this point, though. Even without knowing what happens, Jon Snow, Tyrion Lannister, and Daenaerys Targaryan are my go-to protagonists. Arya Stark would be up there, if the series ever goes does a "5 years later..." time shift.

Aethien, overall and in peak physical condition, Jaime Lannister had only one living rival at the start of the series; and he was neither knight nor hound. The fight with Brienne, Jaime admits he'd have lost unchained: he was malnourished, atrophied, and gave her a run for her money until he ran out of stamina. And the book reflects that.

Probable spoiler for upcoming episode (i.e. I answer the question)
Spoiler:
I read a review from someone that had watched the first 4 episodes. The review said something along the lines of "After Jamie suffered a serious setback and had given up Brienne called him a coward..." That of course matches closely with a certain scene from the book.

I'm enjoying this show enough that I am purposefully staying the hell away from even the remotest idea of possibly touching one of Martin's books. I watch it completely blind, and it's great. I wouldn't trade that for anything.

Somewhat unrelated, the sad part is that in the back of my mind I can hear Terry Goodkind fuming over this show. When I last saw him, he was mentioning how he was brokering a deal with one of the cable networks like HBO/Showtime to turn his books into a series. He described the vision and direction almost as if he were describing the Game of Thrones series as it is now.

He was talking about how Sam Raimi understood his vision and wouldn't change it. Then Sam (or someone) got Disney involved. And what he ended up with was Legend of the Seeker.

It was too long between the seasons so I dove into the books. I read all five in about three months. They have done a pretty good job of moving it from page to screen.

I've now read all the books (die in a fire, person who knows who he is). And unless Book 6 shows up before October, they'll be scripting Season 4 blind.

What? Book 3 is getting split up into two seasons, and they have talked about splitting up the next two books as well.

Also, GRRM has already given an outline of the story ending to the HBO writers. No one is scripting anything "blind."

Talk is it will play out like this...

1st half book 3 = season 3
2nd half book 3 = season 4
book 4 and 5 combined, then split into season 5 and 6.

That takes things out to 2016. Book 6 should be out by then (hopefully much sooner). Book 6 is going to be pretty big and will likely be split into two seasons. That will put things out to 2018.

So really there isn't anything to worry about until then. I expect that the producers will get some early drafts of the final book so they can start writing.

Wow, Aegnor. You're completely more optimistic than me in regards to Book 6.

Martin's got MORE on his plate than he did while writing 5. He's got a TV show to oversee, and merchandise and other (comic, for instance) licensing has picked up.

A Dance with Dragons took 6 years. A Feast for Crows took 5. That's up from 2 each for A Clash of Kings and A Storm of Swords. There's no way the next one takes three or fewer.

I think we're rapidly approaching the point where Martin dies with A Song of Ice and Fire unfinished. And then I laugh.

Unlike another series where that happened, I never bothered to start reading this one.

Well, I think it has more to do with the fact that he wrote himself into a corner. He intended all along to have a 5 year gap. But when he wrote it, it ended up not working. So he had to re-write it, and figure a way out of that corner. He's now done that, so I expect the next books to come faster. The 5th book was published in July of 2011. If it takes 5 years between the 5th and 6th books, then it will come out about the time they'll need to be writing for the next season. It is certain they'd have an early draft well ahead of that.

So yeah, I don't think there will be an issue until 2018.

Well, I've specifically heard from Brandon Sanderson's lips that he has said he won't finish another author's work again, so he would probably be out of the running if that happened. However, he did quantify that after my wife asked him if he'd be willing to finish Melanie Rawn's unfinished (and likely never to be finished) Exiles series, that he'd very seriously reconsider that stance for those.

Aegnor:

Last I read, the people behind the TV show said the existing 5 books would only provide 3 seasons of material. As to the rest of it, I've read the books enough now to know that Martin can't end it and wrote himself into a corner even God's machines can't fix.

Indeed. Anticipated climax for this season is about, what, mid point of the 3rd book?

Season 1 = book 1
Season 2 = book 2
Season 3 = 1st half of book 3
Season 4 = 2nd half of book 3
----------
From there on out (considering published books, I would think that books 4 & 5 could make for Seasons 5, 6 and 7, honestly.
After that, who knows?

Except that the common perception amongst readers I know is that very little happens in books 4 and 5, and most of the content is focused around, at best, tertiary characters. I could very well see that to be Season 5, encompassing both books.
