You know what, I just wanted to come back here and say, this really sucks, and for those of you anywhere near it - good luck. I hope you catch them, and find a way to stop this **** happening again.

Best of luck.

ABC News just called the two people in the FBI video 'White Men'.

Really?

Then, covering the fertilizer plant explosion in West, TX, speculated that it was 'chilling' because it was 20 years after the Branch Davidian compound raid.

Really?

Yeah, I know.

I thought about what kind of person would want to hurt innocent people and mentally eliminated home-grown terrorists 'cause I figured they would have targeted government facilities, then I remembered Eric Rudolph...

Being even relatively sane seems to be an impediment to figuring out the motive of a crazy.

Not sure why the media can't figure it out though.

The suspects are Chechen brothers with the last name Tsarnaev, law enforcement officials told NBC News. The suspect at large, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, is 19 and has a Massachusetts driver’s license, they said. Law enforcement officials told NBC News that both men are legal permanent residents of the United States, had been here about a year and had military experience.

Pretty crazy stuff. The older brother probably got into contact with real Chechen terrorists on his visit to Moscow last year, and thinks (or, thought, I guess, since he died last night) he's doing something in solidarity with them and against the U.S. for backing Putin and Russia. The little brother just followed along (not sure about the other high schooler that they say they're still looking for, or the other one that I thought I heard had been captured last night).

This would be an odd play for Chechen terrorists. The US has generally been sympathetic to the Chechen cause and opposed Russia's tactics.

Pure speculation, and it Sounds a bit like the plot to a novel, but Russia would love to have the US's approval on Chechnya; almost sounds like a frame job.

of course I'm just talking out my rear on this one.

More like just a couple of kids got radicalized. They live in the U.S., see this rich powerful country that isn't taking their side in the Russia-Chechnya issue, and decide to "punish" us for it. Nothing terribly reasonable or logical about it, but that's part of what makes it radical.

Sorry, didn't mean to imply that we support Russian policy in Chechnya. In fact, I was going to put "backing" in quotes, like that, to suggest some muddiness. What the U.S. hasn't been sympathetic to are the methods that Chechen terrorists use - school sieges, theater attacks, car bombings and political assassinations. But in the logic of a twisted mind, it's easy to see things how you want - since the U.S. still deals with Russia, hasn't come out as strongly as they might (or didn't 15 years ago or whatever), etc., it's easy to start thinking that it's a conspiracy by all Western powers against the Islamic world. Lump Russia in with Western powers (we won't even get into the subject of whether Russia is a Western nation), and it's easy to transfer that hatred to the U.S., especially given our presence in Afghanistan, Iraq, the old Gulf War presence, etc.

I hate it when someone types in ten words what it takes me one long paragraph to say. :)

Here's an interesting observation that you may not hear anywhere else: Tamerlan, the name of the older brother who died last night and may have been the leader of this whole thing, is a historically relevant name. Timur the Lame (or Tamerlane, you see a lot of different spellings), was a leader of the Mongols in the later 14th century.
Wikipedia wrote:
Timur envisioned the restoration of the Mongol Empire of Genghis Khan. Unlike his predecessors Timur was also a devout Muslim who referred to himself as the Sword of Islam, converting nearly all the Borjigin leaders to Islam during his lifetime.

His uncle, meanwhile, the guy who's denouncing them on the news, etc., is named ... Ruslan, which is a pretty Russian name. Ruslan and Ludmila is an old Russian fairytale; I knew a Ruslan in Moscow in the early 80s. Ironically,
Wikipedia wrote:
It derives from the Turkic language family and means "lion", "great" or "huge"
.

So, you have a guy named after an Islamic Turkic Mongol leader, and an uncle who seems to side with Russia and the West (at least in terms of his response today), and is named for a popular Russian fairytale.

If I ran a country, criminals' punishments for their crimes would be poetic. Especially in the case violent crime. It is completely inhumane, but I believe you've forfeited your human rights the moment you deprive another of theirs.

Murderer? You get to be executed in the same manner of your own doing. In the case of the boston bombers, their cells would be wired with hidden explosives which would detonate at a time unbeknownst to the cell members (but they would know it was coming at some point, unlike their victims).

So apparently the FBI questioned one the two a couple of years ago because of extremist ties.

Useful Miranda summary in case the issue comes up in discussion:

Volokh Conspiracy

It's amazing. Dude gets caught here, and obviously gets the full protections of US criminal procedure and Constitutional rights. He gets caught overseas, and he gets sent to a CIA black site or just straight up killed in a drone strike.

ETA: Some history from Slate.

Dave, I agree it seems from one extreme to the other. I would think for him to be combatant on American soil you'd have to consider we are already at "war" with his "nation" (like the non-uniformed operatives the Nazis landed during WWII). or we'd have to be a full scale invasion?

Whoever wrote that Slate article does not even begin to understand the purpose of Miranda. Miranda is there for the purpose of the protecting the rights of the person arrested. It is not there to protect anyone else from information that is developed, and it has nothing to do with questioning and everything to do with admissibility.
