Saw the pilot yesterday. Not bad so far. I like the creepy Swedish guy that plays Hannibal.

It's too soon to say whether this is going to be any good, but at least it's not shaping up to be completely terrible like that Kevin Bacon monstrosity. I'll be sad when that show ends, though. I always get a kick out of hearing the Hulu guy say "the following is brought to you by The Following".

I'm excited for its potential. I think it's going to shape up to be something dark and excellent.

Just watched episode #3. The series keeps getting better, darker, and deeper.

I agree. I like the pacing so far, too. A big part of what made Silence of the Lambs so masterful was maintaining just the right balance between psychological and visceral. So far, the show seems to be following that lead pretty well.

Somewhat related...
You knew they were going to do this at least once, if not more, but it still gets you every time.

Oh, yay though! I tweeted the creator (Bryan Fuller, he of WONDERFALLS, PUSHING DAISIES, DEAD LIKE ME, and the only good parts of HEROES), asking if the missing episode (#4) would be available anywhere, and he responded in the affirmative!

Bryan Fuller wrote:
@FarSky Oh yes! It will be available on the DVD, online but not on NBC.

So does that mean it's a go for hulu?

Well...that's a bit of a sticky wicket. I watched the first couple of episodes on Hulu, but this past week, I went to catch #3 and it wasn't there. I tweeted Hulu, and they confirmed that while it's available on computer devices, NBC had pulled the "alternate device" rights (i.e. Apple TV, Roku, etc.) for the time being. No word on if/when they'll get them back.

That said, I presume it means that NBC will make it available on either Hulu/iTunes/their own site.

This show is really, really well done. Glad I gave it a look.

I've heard the "lost" episode will be premiering in non-US markets around the 30th, so it should hit the intarwebz soon after.

Honestly, they should have just based the show around Will Graham. Saved the doctor until much later down the line. I don't remember Will being this...damaged in the book.

He was less socially/emotionally lacking.

If it survives that long (its low-ish ratings took a tumble this past week; thanks, football stuff), Fuller's plan is to essentially handle the events of Red Dragon in season 4.

Mads Mikkelsen is pretty awesome as far as actors go these days ...

Mads Mikkelsen is awesome.

And Danish.

And a former Bond villain.

Valhalla Rising was what I first saw him in. Strange movie.

Ah. Someone had told me otherwise.

Well, there go all my well-planned "Bork. Bork. Bork" jokes.

As a general rule of thumb, if the name ends with -sen, it's likely Danish. If it were Swedish, it'd be -sson.

(But don't rule out either spelling being Norwegian. Norwegian names should generally be -ssen, but it's inconsistent and they frequently use the Danish -sen.)

And also keep in mind that the double S's usually got dropped upon immigration into the US, and also occasionally had the o's and e's swapped in the process, as well. Immigration officials weren't always mindful of the distinctions in spelling, resulting in some strange Anglicization.

Everything goes out the door if the name is Americanized. If they're actually from Scandinavia, though, like Mads...

My family immigrated from Sweden in 1831 (through New York, via an actual ship wreck on Nova Scotia) with the Family name *son (prepend with something like Jorgens, Anders, Hans, Peters, Lars etc..)The surname was changed to -sen, apparently as part of immigration process.

Before he passed away, my father managed to track down the actual immigration forms someone had kept in the family. I digitized them and shared them with the extended family a few years ago.

Show keeps getting better. I really, really, really hope NBC renews this one (it's the only good non-Parks & Rec show they have, though the upcoming Dracula, Believe, and Crisis show some promise).

I love it. I really do. After the let down of The Following, it has been a bright spot.
