They have to...not sure what you are getting at. They can't do internal monologue flashbacks in the T.V. series.

Spoiler:
And they can't have the actor sit on his hands for two seasons.

Big Spoilers inside.

Spoiler:
I disagree. That is what made his transformation later in the series all the more shocking. We don't need to see it. We shouldn't see it. No one knew where he was. Most thought him to be dead. Yet what happened to him was so much worse. Showing what they are doing to him only lessens the impact of Reek later. Granted, the actor that plays Theon is pretty **** retched looking already, don't know how much worse he will get.

As for this weeks show. Not bad really but did they have to kill off the chick with the best tits on the show!

I though the ending narrative by Baelish was really, really great.

Agree. That and the scene between Tywin and Olenna were well acted.

On other characters...

Is it just my memory...or in the books, did we see more of The Mountain earlier on? They've showed him...what...once so far and just mentioned him a few times? I thought he had been around more in the books by now.

For those interested...

Over at Grantland.com, Andy Greenwald does a recap every monday of each episode. He comes from the perspective of never have read the books and is just judging the story and all base on the show. His disclaimer at the end of each recap...

Quote:
[Note on these recaps: I have not read the books, and I have no intention to do so. My goal is to analyze and enjoy Game of Thrones strictly as a television show. So please, no spoilers or “I told you so”s in the comments, OK? OK!]

They are well worth the read to me. It's interesting to see the viewpoints of someone who hasn't read the books and has no idea what's coming. Very entertaining and informative in my opinion.

Latest recap...

IGN also has a running wiki of differences between the show and book, on an episodic basis - http://www.ign.com/wikis/game-of-throne ... ifferences

Raell,

Re Theon...I think they just didn't think they could pull that off in the TV adaptation. And I'm not sure they are wrong. I am definitely concerned with how they will handle the rest of his story, but I don't have any issue with it so far.

Spoiler:
I think they should end his storyline this season with him being broken. Perhaps Ramsay getting Theon to say his name is Reek, or something like that. I don't know exactly, but something that clearly indicates he's broken.

Then next season...nothing. I think that will have a similar effect. Maybe pull the beginning of his ADwD storyline into the end of season 4. That kind of break will allow the same shock at the transformation. And there are several ways that they can emphasize that (whiten his hair, CGI out his teeth, makeup to make him look aged.

My wife has spoiled me on how Theon's story plays out, and I'd agree with your thoughts on it.

Spoiler:
A year or two without seeing him in the show will also lend itself well to seeing him so aged and broken in, hopefully, late S5 / early S6.

Keep in mind that book 5 chronologically takes place at the same time as book 4. So next season will cover the 2nd half of book 3 (with maybe some early parts from book 4 and/or 5 pulled in to S4 where it makes sense). Season 5 will almost certainly contain roughly the first half of books 4 and 5.

Spoiler:
So the continuation of Theon's storyline will definitely occur no later than early S5.

@Aegnor:

That's assuming they don't cut about half of books 4 and 5, which they both need to do and thus probably will.

Well, it will still be two seasons. Even if they cut half of both books there will still be plenty enough material for two seasons.

Why would they need to cut books 4 and 5 so drastically when 4 is relatively short and 5 is roughly the same length as 3?

Because half of 4 and half of 5 was painfully boring on the page and would be even worse on TV.

So since they run concurrently, what's to stop the show writers from mixing the boring of one book with the cool from another book?

Because half a season being boring (either by episode or by content) still makes for a shitty show.

Additionally, that stuff is boring for a reason: tangentiality.

Well, I'm about 75% through ASoS now, far past where the season will be ending, and I'm pretty much a wreck. Can't focus at work, can't get anything done at home. I've spent my last two evenings reading from the time I got off work to the time I go to bed.

Where do you think the season finale is going to leave us?

Spoiler:
I'm thinking episode 9 will be the RW and episode 10 will be a combination of Joffrey's wedding/death and Jon's fights at the wall with him afterwards realizing that he needs to lead the Watch. I was thinking they might save Joffrey's wedding until next season, but there's been soooo much talk about it this season through all the King's Landing characters that I can't see them not finishing that arc. Not sure how much they're going to show of Dany's storyline, but I'm fairly sure she's going to sack Yunkai'i in episode 7.

I can tell you that, but it's based off leaked promo summaries that give a good idea of what is coming when. Check spoiler tag below.

Spoiler:
The RW will definitely be occurring in episode 9. Jeffrey's wedding probably won't happen until next season (summary doesn't mention KL at all) . Episode 10 will likely cover the Yunkai resolution (name of the episode is Mhysa) and Jon returning to the NW, small battle, and Ygritte resolution.

Spoiler:
Kind of interesting that they are going to stretch out Yunkai through episode 10. The episode 7 preview shows her talking to one of the Wise Masters and she pretty much steamrolls the whole city in a single chapter before she moves on to Mireen.

Spoiler:
Not really. She talked to the wise masters, then the mercenary captains, meet Dahrio, probably be a Quaithe scene at some point, she'll destroy the Yunkai armies, they will capitulate and release the slaves, they come out calling her Mhysa, and that covers it. Keep in mind that Dany probably won't appear in episode 9. I think that is plenty of material for the next 4 episodes.

That *all* takes place in one chapter (ch. 42), and they're kicking it off next episode. Seems stupid to stretch it through four episodes.

Spoiler:
You can really go off of how many chapters it takes. You have to evaluate how many scenes there are.

1) Dany reaches Yunkai. Her, Jorah (probably Selmy and Grey Worm too) discuss the forces arrayed against them and what their chances are against them. Discuss that the slavers would like to talk and a meeting should be setup. This scene is the setup for the rest of her S3 story line.
2) Meeting with the Stormcrows. Intense scene with Prendahl insulting her (which will likely take place this Sunday). Scene ends with Daario glancing back and him and Dany exchanging a meaningful look.
3) Dany meets with the Second Sons (name of episode 8). This is the meeting with the Titan's Bastard.
4) Meeting with the Yunkai Wise Masters.
5) Decision to attack and Daario's return with Prendahl's head. This is the scene where we finally meet Daario properly. Follow on scene of Jorah showing his jealousy and distrust of Daario.
6) Scene with Selmy where he talks of Rhaegar and of winning the tourney of Harrenhal and naming Lyanna Stark the queen of love and beauty. I hope this scene is in.
7) Battle? The battle is happening offscreen during #6. No idea how they are going to handle this.
8) Mhysa.

That is a lot of content in one chapter. I think 1 and 2 will happen in episode 7, 3-5 in episode 8, 6-8 in episode 10. There may be some added scenes to make this flow better.

I thought this episode was pretty good. Not great. I'm still confused as to why Melisandre and Gendry are at King's Landing.

Poor poor Theon.
