Myself included, of course.

Came across this site today, and was instantly hooked. I love traveling, geography, history, culture, everything - and GeoGuessr has all of that, and more. Basically, you take a visual geography quiz, trying to guess the location of five street scenes taken from Google Maps. You are awarded points for how close you come, up to a few thousands (possibly with a maximum of four) at a pop. My best score so far is 13,929. (That's a link; click on it to see my results.) Scored over 12,000 on another one, too. I could sit here all night and do this.

In the 12,000 point game, I realize that I mistook Danish for Swedish. In another game there was a picture of a jet plane, a trainer, with a big red star on it. Along with the T-34 and artillery piece across the street in the "Парк Славы" (Park of Glory), that kind of gave it away as Russian, probably Western.

I try not to go too many clicks away from the original location. See how you can do!

Hah, nice. Since my hot start, I've been having trouble breaking 10,000. My new default guess is Australia. I think I was able to pull off the high score that I did because one of the pics was of Highway 1 in the Florida Keys.

Little over 20k. I got super lucky, one of the pics was of a desert road on California. It looked a LOT like the desert roads in so. Nev, so I guessed and was real close.

License plates and street signs are super helpful. :)

I got pretty lucky.

17230 on my first try.

I spent some time at Woomera in Australia when I was on active duty, so that one was pretty easy for me. The others I got fairly close to. I guess all of that time trapsing around the world finally paid off.

Wow, nice scores. Gonna have to up my game a bit!

And, yeah, Mus - one of the first things I look for is which side of the street cars are driving on. Then, languages on signs, kinds of cars, flora and fauna, etc.

I had a couple of 10000 rounds.

Some of those are hard and I need to learn to trust my gut more.

One of them with no major features I go "that looks like Chobe (Where I had my safari tour) so ill punt and put it somewhere in Africa." And it pretty much was. I got a good score but it should have been great. Still kicking myself.

23121 on the first round after I realized I could move on the original picture.

I've gotten several so close that I'd have been able to hold a converstion with the people in the google camera truck if they'd had their windows down.

Apparently missing by 27 meters nets you 6477 points.

A little over 20k for my first try. Not bad considering I'm poor with geography and barely traveled anywhere, not to mention my embarrassing mistake with question B.

It's not really a test of geography. It's a test of general knowledge, observational skills, and information gathering skills.

29078 - my inability to read or even copy Cyrillic text meant the most I could figure out for question (E) was that it was somewere between Moscow and St. Petersburg.

Are you doing it 100% without computer assist or by referencing what you can find ?

Well, my personal rule is that I don't use any computer assist, or go more than, say, 100 feet or so from the original spot.

Hah, I had one in Russia, and recognized it as a place I'd been to. I nailed it to within 400 meters, got something over 6000 points. Of course, I also mistook Mexico for Poland, so just got over 11,000 points all told.

I would say it helps more to know cultural details and such. The geography you don't need to know, your research will teach you.

For example: A general knowledge of languages will help you identify street signs. Seeing people driving on the left side of the road narrows your search as well. Phone number formats on street signs are often the only clue you can find - especially if the signs are in a foreign character set - the numbers are still recognizable.

(And yes, the game is obviously designed expecting people to try to look up as much as they can to find the location. it's still rather hard to locate most spots.)

Sometimes you luck out. I had one on the last set of questions where in one direction i could see "Welcome to Kansas!" and move a few feet the other way and turn around, I can see "Welcome to Colorado!" That really narrows down your placement...

I've found URL's in billboard advertising surprisingly revealing.

No kidding--i found Botswana that way. The worst ones are on sideroads in the middle of nowhere that have no signs for miles.

Yeah, I got one that was a cabin, covered in snow, with a couple of snowmobiles parked outside. That's it. WTF. I picked the Yukon, it was Sweden.

Also, apparently, Australia looks a lot like the American SW. But it's far, far away from the American SW. Resulting in very few points.

South Africa & New Zealand have both thrown me once.

WTH is up with Brazil? I've gotten Brazil in about 70% of my games often more than once in a game.

Oz is a lot more red than here.
