My guess is the reboot finds a way to return the Botany Bay to Earth, and Khan tries to take over, as he had tried to do before his exile on the colony ship. YMMV.

I don't think Benedict Cumberbatch is playing Khan (IMDb's rumor be damned.)

I was right, one point for me. Only thing I missed on was Botany Bay coming back. It didn't but it's crew did. I feel so vindicated.

Oh, and the now late Admiral's daughter may very well be the next villain.

Just saw it. Feeling rather smug now.

But she's Dr. Carol Marcus.

Spoiler:
After the first Abrams ST movie came out, the first thing I said was that I hoped that in the next movie Abrams focuses on a new Klingon and reboots the species a little bit and make them even more warlike, barbaric, and awesome. After seeing this new movie, that hope has increased tenfold. Those klingons were awesome.

I was a little disappointed that the villain did turn out to be Khan, but I was happy with how they portrayed him. They correctly showed the "super" part of him often as well as the intelligent and brutal side of him.

The only part I was rolling my eyes over was Spock's "Khaaan!" scream. It was forced and half-hearted. Kirk's original was a thousand times better (and I have no emotional or nostalgic stock vested in TOS trek).

Overall, I liked it. I think it flowed and meshed together better than the first movie. It was a little anticlimactic, but even that still worked. There weren't as many gaping plot holes this time around, either. Well, other than "We need to take him alive! We need his blood to save Jim (and nobody saw that coming, right? right? right? yeah.)." "But.... Bones.... we have 72 other supermen on board and they have blood too, and you even just unfroze one of them to put Jim in the..." "Quiet, you!"

Admiral Robocop was also cool to see. As well as he continues to uphold the tradition that all starfleet admirals are ignorant, idiot, naive assholes.

Just got back from the theater.

This was the most entertaining Star Trek movie ever created.

This movie finally allowed me to put my finger on what it is that bothers me about Abrams. He has no idea how to handle a plot, so instead of focusing on one and bringing it to a satisfying conclusion, he just throws three more out there when he gets stuck with the first.

This movie sounds polarizing to viewers.

Which is fine. This is star trek. Scotty can just reverse the polarity of the main deflector...

Fairly decent sci-fi/action movie. Pretty crappy Star Trek movie.

Spoiler:
Two other things I forgot to mention:

1. I can now really get under a Trekkie's skin by reminding them that it's been proven that Kirk is a furry.

2. Section 31 is now truly solidified in trek canon. Another thing to poke and jab at a Trekkie who hates that idea, because it is something that polarizes fans.

Star Trek needs to come full circle and cast Wil Wheaton again.

This pretty much sums up my feelings on the film.

http://io9.com/star-trek-into-dumbness-507058729

The fanservice is what killed it for me. It absolutely killed the film, because the film became wholly about it, and forgot to be about itself.

Many of these complaints sound like my complaints about the first movie.

Which is to say, I enjoyed it, it wasn't bad, but it was horribly, horribly flawed in ways that are difficult to forgive.

I wasn't expecting better from the second.

Hmm.

I would argue Abrams only writes schlock. The producer credit can be shared and doesn't always count for much. When it does count, it's for things like casting and personel. Abrams choice in casting has always been stellar, and as for directorial skills, Abrams is top-notch. Just keep his hands off the script.

What chapped my *** was that the original film (which was far better than anything the IP had ever produced to that point) went through serious plot gymnastics in order to strike out and boldly go where none of that other stuff went before, and then because he had no other ideas, Abrams turned the second film into literally nothing but fanservice and Star Trek's Greatest Hits. That would be admissible, except that his inclusions actively undermined the very film he was creating, to no end other than making hollow references.

See, and that disqualifies you from so much in this conversation.

Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan not only was the best trek movie ever made, it ranks up there among the best sci-fi/fantasy movies ever made in any setting. It was freakin' spectacular.

I'd also rate IV (the Voyage Home) and VIII (First Contact) as significantly better than Abrams' first offering. I'd say it's a tossup between ST VI (the Undiscovered Country) and Abrams' Star Trek, and I'd lean on VI being the better of the two of them.

There were ways in which Star Trek was spectacular, and still impresses me. It's far better than 6 of the previous ten star trek movie offerings, but the horrible plot holes, and utter disregard for simple physics brings it way down for me.

The voyage home has a special place in my heart, not because of the merits of the movie, but because I associate it with a departed friend.

Anyway probably going to be done early today. This or Ironman 3?

I vote Ironman 3. While this was entertaining, I thought IM3 was better. The more I think about Into Darkness, the less I like it.

Iron Man 3.

And Darkroland, that's been exactly my experience as well. I walked out with an unsure feeling; as I've thought about it more, it's grown to intense dislike.

Between the two I liked Iron Man 3 better, but I did actually like this move as well.

I haven't yet seen ST:ID, but I suspect I will agree with you.

Except I felt the same way about Iron Man 3. I enjoyed it in the theatre, but wasn't wowed. It hasn't aged well in my mind over the last couple weeks.

I think it was better than the first one. The scream made me roll my eyes though. I enjoyed it.

I liked it.

I never watched much of the original show, but did see most of TNG on TV. I liked DS9. I'm not a Trekkie by any means. ST is generally "ok." I've only seen bits of Wrath of Khan. /shrug I like how they portray the characters and it's entertaining for what it is. The plot wasn't awful.

I liked the first one too. The lens flare was a bit much, but that's a small complaint. The only thing that made me try to blank it out with my mind was the whole plot behind the main villains. Like, the Romulans didn't evacuate? They had enough time to know their **** was going to explode, but they didn't try to move people off and just waited for the planets' cure?! They... had no other colonies??!! Now some upset miners are traveling through time to get revenge on Spock for not getting there in time?!?!?! The miners are equipped to fight a war?!?!?!?!!!?!?11 MAKE IT STOP.

Otherwise it was ok. I don't really know what people expect.

Spoiler:
I thought Spock-Khaaaaan was pretty good. I don't know if such a thing can be objectively measured. I liked how they pulled the switcheroo with Spock/Kirk and how the characters got along. I didn't have to fight any lame **** to suspend my disbelief. I like how Spock got to go avenge Kirk and kick Khans ***. It was fun. Seeing sweet space stuff on the big screen is satisfying. Worth the price of admission.
