It's a Superman movie, and after The Dark Knight Rises, any involvement by Nolan makes me leery.

Everything makes you leery. Your first name might be Dennis.

Superman bores the **** out of me, but this might be interesting. If nothing else the effects will be badass and lots of people will get punched. PUNCH ALL THE PEOPLES

Superman was always limited either by his morality, Kryptonite, or the rare physical threat. I for one am glad this does not seem to involve Lex Luthor and a realestate scam.

Bought tickets for Saturday afternoon at the 3D IMAX. Yay!

(I'd love go to see it tonight, but as both Phe and I have work tomorrow morning, there's no way we're pulling a midnight showing. :( )

I loved Batman Begins, and was less impressed with each successive batman movie afterward. However, the real problem with the Nolan movies has nothing to do with the movies themselves, and everything to do with the corner Nolan has painted Warner Brothers into.

The Avengers franchise has thus far made Marvel/Disney over five billion dollars in Box Office receipts alone. Each successive movie draws in fans it never would have before because people now want to see them all if they liked a previous movie. Tying them all together in a shared continuity is brilliant. Fans love it, and more importantly it simply ends up making more money.

Warner Brothers has long had this opportunity, where Disney is even now limited by rights that were traded away before they ever bought Marvel. Warner has all the rights to DC comics, and could have been spending all this time planning a justice league movie. They even had the writer-director of The Avengers signed over five years ago to make a Wonder Woman movie, and then parted ways with him due to "creative differences." (1.5 billion dollars later, Disney has to be giving Warner a big "Nyah Nyah"). Worse yet, Nolan's movies are considered somehow sacred to most batman fans (Khross excepted.) You can't remake them now...not for decades. With Christian Bale finished, and that story done, that means a Justice League franchise in line with what Marvel has done with The Avengers is a near impossibility.

This Superman movie looks decent, but it will always be a standalone movie.

Never underestimate Warner Bros' inexplicable ability to **** up their superhero franchises. Justice League would have had a better shot had Green Lantern not been such a critical and commercial massacre. Unfortunately, they made a legitimately terribad movie.

Green Lantern was better than The Dark Knight Rises, even if I allow "legitimately terribad" in place of "disappointingly pedestrian, but good fun."

That said, you're failing to see the larger problem, Taly, probably because you don't read comic books. All non-Timm appearances of Superman in film and television are Earth Prime. Jonathan Kent and Martha Kent nee Clark die of old in the print canon universe that Timm uses. If Jonathan Kent is dead, you're on Earth Prime and limited by the fact that Superboy Prime/Superman Prime/Prime is a righteous evil jackass bent on taking over the universe.

Also, that little bit of trivia indicates something else: Nolan's Batman does not exist in a world with super powers. There are no meta-humans on that particular Earth.

Greatest movie ever made...I don't care if I never see another movie again. There is nothing that can touch this. I had tears rolling down my face as I walked out of the theater.

Granted, I love Superman. So take that for what you will.

Awful. Lovely musical score, Great great special FX, but just the most diabolical script. Inane twatwaffle. Just awful. And this coming from someone who really enjoys superhero movies.

The worst part is that the film keeps trying to be good then **** it up so badly.

Rosie and I, independently, were thinking of walking out at least 3 times throughout the movie. I can't remember a film I last thought that about.

So far the critics seem to support neither SuiNeko, nor Jhorra, Farsky and Raell. At 57% on RT, it appears to be considered a middling, mediocre forgettable movie that still kept a majority of people entertained.

That's...not quite how RT works, but ok.

I will note that almost all the people I know who enjoyed (inexplicably, imo) 'Green Lantern' didn't care for 'Man of Steel.'

While most critics gave it middling returns, consumers watching it are giving it an A-.

I think you mean Otisburg. It's just a little bitty place.

As for walking out of a movie, I've only done it once. And that was for Monkeybone. Though I retroactively wish I could add Tank Girl to that list. I have yet to see this Supreman movie but I have a hard time thinking it could be in the same league as Monkeybone.

Having said that, I have been known to sleep through some movies at the theater if they aren't interesting me enough (Brothers Grimm and Dungeons and Dragons are the only ones I know for sure I've done that with).

What if Warner Bros, knowing how beloved Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight films were, intentionally made The Dark Knight Rises bad, so as to make audiences more accepting of a shared-universe Batman reboot series after only a couple of years?

The idea is that 'Man of Steel' is DC's first foray into "shared universe" territory ('Green Lantern' was meant to be, but, well...). Goyer, Nolan, and Snyder have discussed how Batman exists in the MoS universe, but it wouldn't be the Dark Knight-series version. It would be Bruce Wayne, just not the particular flavor of Batman showcased in BB, TDK, and TDKR.

Confused yet? Go go Warner Bros.

I'm not sure what you mean. THe percentage rating on RT is the percentage of positive reviews. If a movie gets 60%, it had 6/10 positive reviews. It says nothing about how positive those reviews are, of course, nor does it show whether the 4/10 negative reviews really hated it or if they merely thought it was mediocre. (The average review is shown separately.)

Man of Steel is sitting at 56% positive reviews, solidly on the "rotten" side of the 60% line, but not in the "really sucks" section, either. It's average review is 6.3 out of 10. Digging deeper, few of the reviews show it as really bad, but few show it as really good, either. It is not a polarizing film, hated by its detractors and loved by its promoters. It's just there.

When I first heard about Man of Steel and saw some of the trailers, I wanted to see it.
When it was released and saw the 60ish% RT rating, I didn't want to see it.
When I saw Jhorra, Rael, and FarSky praise it, I wanted to see it again.
When I saw Sui rip it, I didn't want to see it again.
I'm so damn fickle.

I love movies but with each year that passes it seems I go see fewer and fewer of them in the theater.

(Oh that reminds me, and a bit off topic, I heard great things about a Korean film called "Oldboy", so a few nights ago I instant queued it on Netflix only to discover that they only have the sadass dubbed version instead of the proper English subtitles. I refuse to watch foreign films with goddamn bad dubbing. Sigh. Do I really have to buy this film just to watch it properly?)
