I'm sure if the police act on this they're somehow violating someone's rights. After all, if we allow the police to seek people who hit-and-run bike riders based on Tweets, the entire Constitution is at risk. Tyranny!

That explains the sudden increase in lucidity.

We don't have to go solely on the tweet. We have the cyclist who can hopefully describe the car and/or its driver.

It's sad that I fault her less for the hit-and-run than I do for tweeting about it afterward. Criminality is far more forgivable than idiocy.

Edit: Perhaps she'd knock fewer cyclists off their bikes if she'd not tweet while driving 95 mph.

The better course of action would have been to put it in reverse and run over the cyclist again, and then not say anything on twitter.

Judging by the actions of the cyclists in the Philadelphia area, they deep down really want to be run over.

I'm as big an advocate for cyclist rights and share the road initiatives as most you'll find, but the thing that's really most distrubing about that tweet is that she thinks she has more right to the road because of some "road tax" she thinks he's not paying.

In that case, she probably is paying several automobile-based taxes the cyclist isn't, assuming the cyclist also doesn't own a car.

Let the Bears pay the Bear Tax! I pay the Homer tax. Dad that's the Homeowners tax.

Um, is it?

There are several Norwiches in New England, and the article refers to pictures she's taken of her speedometer at 95 mph.

In any event, the article explicitly says there are no road taxes, that roads (wherever this incident occurred, thanks, sloppy reporting) are paid for out of general taxation.

The Brits still use MPH.

England uses miles. It is their unit, after all.

Bah, I thought they'd converted to metric by now.

The article actually ends up being pretty geographically confused, by my reading.

The accident describes the cyclist riding on the left and being hit by an oncoming car (implying that the car was driving on the right). Then, the cyclist uses metres, windscreen, and bonnet conversationally, just in case it wasn't confusing enough, yet.

Metre rather than meter should've been your first clue!

Its England. And there, like here, there's no such thing as "Road Tax".

Vehicle Excise Duty

Its not a tax for road usage. They're paid for by local VAT and other sales/property taxes.

1. Its based on carbon emissions.
2. Many cyclists also have vehicles and pay Vehicle Excise Duty.
3. Read the article I linked FFS.
