That's me trying to do them for the 2nd time. I'm trying to figure out how. It's hard because I don't want to get hurt falling to the ground.

Any tips? :D

You're running at the bag and then throwing your leg up to spear the bag. That's not how a flying side kick is delivered.

Don't start with a flying side. Start with just a standard side kick. I don't see enough of the hip rotation of a properly executed side kick there. You definitely have some of it--and (from what I can see) you're striking with the correct part of your foot, but the force on a flying side kick should come from hip rotation+extension--your bodies momentum is secondary. Once you get the jump-side and can stick the landing, its fairly easy to transition to the flying side.


Master the side kick first, then jump-sidekick, then flying jump side.

Thanks for the tips, I really appreciate it. I want to start straight with a flying side though!! It looks cooler.

The side kick is one of the two true power kicks (along with the back-pivot kick) - a well executed side or back pivot kick can end a fight--its also a low risk kick because its delivered near maximum extension and much of the body is protected (including the head).


I'm afraid you wont 'look cool' until you master the basics-- if looking cool is what you're after, this isnt it. Your arms are flying all over the place as you try to maintain balance. Its involuntary, but you have not developed the muscle memory and balance or timing to look accomplished at a flying side kick. Its a Dead giveaway you don't really know what you're doing. You'll need tens of thousands of reps at the base kicks before your arms will be under control.

Ok, next time I'll try to keep my arms from flying all over the place. We'll see if it takes thousands of reps.

edit:

I think it looks cooler if my arms are flailing though... so maybe it's still worth it.

Worry about the kick and sticking the landing, first--the arms will come once you have enough body control to maintain balance without flinging them everywhere.

And for my money, a jump spinning crescent kick is a lot 'cooler' looking --and easier to master.

Those don't make you fall on the ground though, so they're not as cool looking.

lol. he's not going to be striking that high without a lot more flexibility.

The other thing I should have mentioned--your body is nearly horizontal (one reason you can't stick the landing) Your body should be more upright so you dont have to rotate your body back into the vertical so much as you're landing.

BUT that requires a) more practice b) more flexibility. Without a flexibility training regimen you're likely going to be stuck.

A) lose the shoes. Start with doing it in bare feet.
b) Get the base side kick motion down.
Assuming you're striking with your right leg:
1.Right knee comes up so your thigh is horizontal across your body. Calf should be about 45 degrees, foot should be sideways (preferably bladed).
2. Pivot your left foot so your toes are 180 degrees away from your target. As you do so, extend your right leg. (keeping your foot horizontal) this will force your hips to pivot (when at full extension, your hips are canted at about a 45 degree angle to the floor and away from the target)
3) Return the same position as 1. (DONT just drop your leg)--the hips rotate in and rotate out again.
4) SET your foot down. You should never be off balance in this process.


The SAME motion applies to a jump side kick, but when you bring your knee up for position 1, your upward moment with your right knee, along with your left leg should jump taking your whole body up with it.

A) In a real fight I'd have shoes on

B) Why can't I just skip learning this? Or could I just practice this during doing flying kicks?

a) you're not going to use this in a fight. flying side kick is absurdly easy to dodge or deflect. If your opponent is on a horse they can't dodge as well and the added height is intended so you can unhorse an opponent. (thats what this kick was designed for) but in a real fight there's too much lead time to dodge to use this technique.

I've got years of martial arts experience and I've NEVER landed this kick in a fight or sparring match. I've never even SEEN someone land one in a match including watching MMA, two dozen karate/TKD tournaments, etc. At best I use it to set up a flurry as I close distance, or as a feint, but I've never actually scored a hit. I've broken plenty of boards with it though. Also, you'll fall less when you're first learning, you can grip the floor with your toes and adjust your balance more finely--

b) because you need to learn the basic motion, for that you break down the kick into minimum components--learn those so they're automatic, then adding the jump becomes easier. what you're doing is trying to run before you can walk.

You asked for opinions. I've got 8 years of TKD experience and a belt to prove I know what I'm talking about as well as a number of tournament trophies on my wall. I've also got real practical experience applying said techniques under fight conditions. You asked for opinion. You got it.

I predict a broken wrist or arm or sprained ankle in your near future if you continue like this.

1) Don't act like a child and work on modifying your technique to be effective instead of wanting to look cool.
2) Take the advice of people that know what they're talking about
3) Since I doubt you are taking any of this seriously, try putting your videos to music and adding in some slow motion for more likes and views of your flailing
4) Stay away from dark alleys

I'm not sure what you're trying to achieve here. Your engineer brain surely must be telling you that a running start is useless and impractical in the face of proper technique or resistance of any kind.
