A couple of times, I've gotten the main street in Dawson City, Yukon. The first time, I thought it was Russia, given the age and architectural style of the building. Now I know exactly where Dawson City is.

I guess this site just fired up - last week, when I first found it, there were something like 12,000 Facebook likes. I noticed it was going up, and on Saturday, pointed out to my wife that they were up to 54,000. Today, it's up 104,000. Kind of fascinating to watch.

Edit: OK, yeah, looks like it blew up this weekend. There's a lot of coverage that came out today on it, including this little tidbit that describes exactly how I feel about it:

If you weren’t connected to the correct Twitter tubes this weekend, there’s a chance you may not have spent every waking moment playing GeoGuessr. So let’s put that right now.

Anton Wallén’s clever repurposing of Google’s Street View magics dumps you in the middle of somewhere, and you have to try to figure out where that is. You can move around in Street View as you might expect, but obviously you can’t zoom out to see the map you’re in. Once you’ve wandered about, hunted down clues to a location, and feel pretty sure of where you are, you drop a pin somewhere in the world on the map top right, and you score points based on how close you were. And then you keep doing that until you’ve forgotten to go to bed tomorrow night.

Or, this:
Quote:
And those desert roads can often lead to a wild guess, sometimes tens of thousands of kilometres out as it turns out that yet again this stretch of Nevada is in the West of Australia.

Second edit: Sheesh, and here I thought my 13000-point score was pretty good.

Last edit: OK, I think this is the best I can do - I went all out and summoned up all of my Google-fu and research skills. Roadside signs in Hawaii and the Czech Republic really helped the cause:

31847 points, nothing more than a few hundred meters away for any of them. Kind of fun, but it really did kill my afternoon.

Does it base the location of your score based on current camera position or initial camera position

Pretty sure it's the initial camera position.

I can get 12-15k not using the interwebs. Using the interwebs, its 30k easy. Unless I get an asian country. Then, its all down to whether or not I can find a street sign.

I got burned hard on the Oz/Western US connection. I guessed Oz, and it was Colorado.

For me, I go
"What language are the signs written in?"
"What side of the road are people driving on?"
"What do other signs generally look like?"
"What's the landscape like?"

Strangely enough, that's about all you need to get *fairly* close.

Pinning it down is a little harder.

Awesome. I just got one, looking at a Nevada desert area with nothing around. Turned around and saw, Oh, that's Lake Mead. Within 28k or so. :) But not by identifying the lake. It was the sign prohibiting shooting.

Lol.... got dropped about 500 yards from the VAB at Kennedy space center. Took me about 2 seconds to know almost exactly where I was. And then I let my daughter rush me through clicking the actual map location

So, I have a new record low for worst single-guess score.

I had a desert road with nothing on it, and it wouldn't let me go further than about half a mile from the initial drop. Just featureless dry grassland with an asphalt road and a reddish shoulder.

I said, "what the hell" and dropped a pin in Northern Austrailia (probably subconsciously cuing off Müs' comment earlier). It was in Brazil. I got 33 points.

Yeah, I like doing it without using the web (although trying to see just how close you can come is fun, too. I found a spot in Norway, but then was 45 meters off as I clicked across the road from the starting spot).

Not only Australia, but I also get hung out to dry on South Africa. It apparently looks a lot like Mexico (of course, if I had clicked closer to the people on the road up ahead and noticed their skin color, I might have figured it out!).

I've determined that I should ensure that at least 2 out of every 5 guesses are somewhere in Brazil.

Yeah, Brazil gets me everytime, unless I see a sign.

And, I beat your low point score, Kaffis - 28 points! I was actually trying to see how bad it could get, so I clicked down around Antartica on my last guess: 28 points. Rather pleased with myself :)

Heh, I landed in a conference center in Jamaica. Inside the building. "Oh, here's a couch - can you figure out where you're at?!" :|

I got a town in Romania and got it within 1 meter. It gave me 6479. I'm guessing 6480 is the max for an exact match?

Nope, I guess not. Just got 0km distance and still got 6479,so that is the max. It was on a Portuguese island off Morocco and there was a festival going on. All the guys were hanging out wearing white pants and shirts, and these round straw hats with bands around them. Carreiros Do Monte, Carros De Cesto Tobogon is what the poster said.

Sounds like a nice dream.

I've attached a photo of what I was looking at when the next location popped up.

Huh. I wonder if that's a festival, or just regular Madeirans hanging out after work. Madeira says "wine" to me, and those look like baskets of some sort that would be dragged along behind you ... Maybe grape pickers? Coffee beans?

Ah, got it. You're gonna love this.

Wikipedia's page on Monte, in Funchal, Madeira wrote:
... the basket cars or tobogan run, remains one of the most popular features of Monte for the visitors. This enables visitors to be transported 2 kilometres (1.2 mi) downhill to Livramento through the streets at fairly high speeds in large wicker baskets, conducted by two drivers wearing the traditional white uniform with straw boaters.

****' fantastic.

Just a hair under 10k on my first go... took me a few games before my girlfriend played one and demonstrated that you can, indeed, move.

Turns out that's fairly handy.

Now I don't want to play for fear of taking forever to play one game. :(
