That's hardly definitive, and I don't like the idea much, but even if true, it hardly spells doom. I didn't care for the idea of Elijah Wood as Frodo, either, but it worked out well in the end.

As long as you accept that he was at least 20 years too young, not fat enough, and therefore unable to represent some of the core of the character.

I was rather glad they didn't make the hobbits into little fat blobs. It became more believable with them looking spry and they were easier to cheer for when they didn't look like they visited McDonalds too often.

Except that that undermines the image of the idyllic lifestyle, and removes a clear method of showing the change in the characters from beginning to end.

Then again, Jackson made the story about the Ring instead of being about the change in the characters from beginning to end, so I suppose in the end you're right, it was fine for his movie.

I cant wait for this movie. Lord of the Rings trilogy were fantastic even if I had a few problems with a couple changes Peter Jackson made.

Halflings = hobbits. Halflings = dexterous. I just imagine hobbits as having great metabolisms.

The Hobbit pushed back to the end of 2012, due to New Line's internal studio folderol.

MGM's scheduling idiocy and fiduciary shortcomings force del Toro off the project; film still not greenlit. Sad FarSky is sad.

That's a god damned shame. I was looking extra forward to it because of del Toro. Kinda wonder if this will ever happen ever?

I don't mind del Toro not being on it anymore. Honestly I had a hard time believing he would leave the visual alone enough for them to blend with the trilogy. Frankly, I hope that Jackson directs it.

If Jackson directs it, he will leave out the best non-main characters like Bard. And Beorn.

Really? What awesome non-main characters were left out of LOTR?

If you say that Boring *** Bombadil, it'll go very hard for you.

I don't know that he left out any badass characters. It's more that he added new material that didn't need to be there (basically everything with Arwen) and omitted things that needed to be (like the Scouring of the Shire).

Ugh and don't forget the 14 alternate endings that he couldn't choose from so he added them all.

Why?

When I read it, he was an annoying immortal singing hippy. The movies definitely didn't need that.

Wasn't he father earth? The whole natural world tie in whatnot.

I was pissed they skipped the wights.

Bombadil!

And Radagast

And Halbarad and the Grey Company

And Glorfindel (Arwen doesn't count)

And Fredegar Bolger!

There you go.

Since you *ahem* asked...here's what I would have done, in nutshell form, in the first half of the first movie given the constraint of no Bombadil. It would probably add 10 minutes to the running time of the movie, which is cool with me.

We start where hobbitses escape Riders by using Bucklebury Ferry.

They enter spooky, misty Old Forest. Walk around a bit, talk that they will never find their way out. Suddenly a large standing stone emerges out of the mist. Hobbits happy to get out of forest. They walk amidst stones, decide to stop for elevensies and everyone blacks out. They wake in wights tomb and it looks like its curtains for our plucky young heroes. Radagast rescues them...says something about Gandalf told him to be on watch for halflings. Radagast picks up daggers from tomb, gives them to hobbits, leads them out of Barrow Downs, points to Bree in the distance and then summons a horse and rides off fast into the wild. It starts to rain which leads to the hobbits knocking on the door of Bree.

This would add a cool omitted minor character, add the barrow downs (which I sorely missed), and add the basis for the explanation for how Merry hurt the Witch King in Return of the King.

Edit: And I've always been bothered by the hobbits immediate arrival at Bree after escaping the Riders. Fixes that too.

Radagast didn't really add anything to the storyline.
