If I'm doing that, I'm going to actually go visit my friends and play games. Which, as an aside, hasn't been very possible since the first generation Xbox/Playstation.

Additionally, if this is an MMO, then I'm sure I can't exclude those people who have nothing better to do than ruin my gaming experience.

What's the problem with wanting singleplayer game experiences that are good?

There's nothing wrong with wanting a great single player experience. If you want one, do what I'm gonna do and stay away from The Division, Titanfall and Destiny.

I mean, fair enough. I'm not trying to purposefully derail the xBONE thread.

I guess my point is, with all the next Gen consoles... everything is moving multiplayer. I'm pretty sick of it.

I don't get it. You remote control the dog like you do the UAVs?

I dunno for certain. But it says you can play as Riley. Which is the dog.

Gotta admit, the world really would be a better place if you could remote control your dog.

Is there a difference?

So this 24 hour window. Am I to assume the ***** currently are manually shutting off their internet connections between online sessions of multiplayer, hulu and netflix? I am not buying it.

I know we've beaten this to death, but personally, I just have to ask WHY? What possible reason that benefits the consumer would the console need to "check in" with a central server once a day?

No one is acting like it's done in the consumer interest, Dark. It's there to combat the rampant piracy this generation has seen. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

I hear you, my perspective is that every time I start a game on my 360 today it already goes online to check for updates so what's the difference?

The difference is that now, if the servers are down, you can still play your game. With this change, MS controls your console. If your net connection goes offline, if you're moving and it takes a week to get your new internet set up, if live goes down, then you're done playing until it's fixed. Some day, MS will decide it's too old to support, and turn it into a brick, invalidating all previous game/video/music purchases. Don't worry, they can be repurchased through the Xbox one Classic arcade on the next version. I realize that's a bit extreme, but Lenas is right, this is 100% to combat piracy and 0% for the benefit of the consumer. There's no reason they should treat their legitimate customers like pirates, when the pirates are going to crack the system and remove all of this BS anyway.

What if you wanted to play but didn't want to update (bad updates happen often, corrupting saves, etc) and your console instead got locked down because you didn't want to? There's a difference between not being allowed to sign into multiplayer because you have an outdated client, and not being able to play your game at all.

Ooh, I hadn't even thought of that, I can think of several 360 games offhand that I read had a bad patch, that I waited on patching until it was remedied (while still playing the "unpatched" version). Another good point.

You guys keep saying piracy, but it's not. It's the secondary market, which has all the same effects (as far as the publisher is concerned -- their "good" game not garnering revenue for them despite being critically acclaimed, played and liked by all, etc.) while being VASTLY more rampant.

I'm not sure if you realize how easy it is to pirate games this generation. Almost easier than PC games, to be honest.

And yet, I bet it's vastly outweighed by the secondary market. Billions of Gamestops' rents aren't free.

On another note, I noticed that Killer Instinct is among the X-Box 1 exclusives. That makes my inner high-schooler giddy. That game was the closest I think I came to being an arcade rat for a summer.

I don't wanna get into a conjecture circle jerk but let's just split it down the middle and say they're both factors. Either way, no one is trying to claim that the 24 hour check in will result in consumer benefit. "Always connected" experiences can benefit the consumer, but the check in specifically, no.

I think that's throwing the baby out with the bathwater, though. I'd say the ability to share my games among up to 10 "family" members is a pretty neat notion, and it's enabled by the 24-hour check-in.

Would the user experience be more universally beneficial if it was an opt-in/out feature? Undoubtedly, for some, the check-in is not practical.

I could do Orchid's Ultra Combo with.. moderate reliability at one point, when given the opening.

Oh, and I could totally make my brother ragequit with Inferno cheesiness. Forward, Forward, Punch till you win.

I will probably pick up an XBone at some point, but not right away. I want to see how their policies pan out first, and of course watch their exclusives.

Note: it's a 1-hour check-in when someone is playing from your shared library. But how is any of that beneficial to a person that wants to play a single player game and has no intention of sharing it with anyone else? How would the check-in benefit them?
