Two types of games get greenlit by publishers today:
Multiplayer/online-centric games and Annual franchise sequels.

The production costs are also a symptom. You have to WOW people to sell your game and recoup your investment.

Because the used/rental market eviscerates any profit they could make on a 10-30 hour single player campaign of GOOD content. You don't buy your own copy of that. You buy it used and sell it back to Gamestop in a week or two, one of 3 or 4 guys whose plays send 1 new purchase to the publisher's pocket, or you rent it, which is even worse.

Still, the game I'm playing (remember me) and the game I will play next (The last of us) are both new IP's. Granted, we have all lamented the downfall into terrible MULTIPLAYER ONLY FOREVER land. Unfortunately, that is also a symptom of the Rental/used game market. Those games need dlc to maintain interest, or gamers will trade it in for the next blockbuster (which, it has been reported, did nothing to stop the falloff of gamers from Halo 4). Also, you have to remember, rental copies are still copies sold. Games that have high demand sell a lot of rental copies.

First quote, okay, I'll give you that one. I still think it's different than MS's current vision of always-on, always-authenticated though. The second quote seems like it just turned into Folding @ Home, which was a completely optional program anyone could run. Or it could have been referring to the PS3's old ability to install Linux and chain them together like the military did.

Neither scenario turns the PS3 into a useless machine if you don't have an internet connection.
The second statement was from 2002, Lenas. ConsoleWire is gone, but they had a ton of information on the plans for the PSN and other stuff back then. The first statement was from weeks before the Official E3 Reveal in 2005. And I mentioned, incidentally, we were very fortunate Sony didn't go that way.

Well if Microsoft decides to change policy I think everyone will welcome it with open arms. I think they're too far into the development cycle of this system to do a 180 like that, though.

For any other company, I'd agree ...

Microsoft, however, can leverage the software stables behind Windows, Office, and their SAS Platforms to solving that problem if need be. Also, I'm not exactly defending Microsoft or the XBox One. I'm just more annoyed that Sony is once again benefiting more from market, message control, and secondary media than their own development efforts. And, of course, I won't ever forgive them for using the courts to deny us true platform competition when Microsoft decided to get into this business. The MGS2 fall-out still hurts us ALL as gamers.

Not to mention, this system has not launched. I'm sure 100% of that system can be updated remotely. We shall see how they shake out in the months to come.

Well, so that's just clear as mud.

http://www.gamasutra.com/view/news/194150/Further_clarification_on_Sonys_DRM_policies_No_more_online_pass.php

Quote:
We've already come right out and said we're not going to allow online pass. And the word "allow" is key there. Specifically with online, with PS+ requiring a charge to play online, we would not want any publisher [to charge.]

In general, we're all businesses. Sony or Microsoft is never going to be able to tell EA or Activision exactly what they can do. What we like to say at PlayStation is that we set the precedent. The way we are approaching this is that we want this to be extremely consumer-friendly, extremely retailer-friendly, and extremely publisher-friendly. My personal opinion is that it's hard for me to believe that any major publisher is going to put an extra set of used DRM onto game titles because that wouldn't put them in a good spot, right?

It's not like any publisher is going to be an outright dick to their users, right guys? I mean, they need your business, they're not going to do something you don't like..... *nowbacktoreality, bob*

I'm fairly certain I've just been exposed to a level of irony that Jonathan Swift and Alexander Pope cannot rival.

I can't wait to see their big name exclusives on the PS4. As good as some of these announced launch titles are, they are still early gen.

Haha well-played, sir. Game of Thrones level betrayal-a-thon. Looking at you, Insomniac.

No, I'm more talking God of War and Uncharted and . . . okay, mostly God of War :P And of course the new IPs for this gen.

Uncharted is the only PS exclusive that actually made me consider buying a PS3.

Do they make 360 controllers for the PS? Cause I seriously hate those.

I think some third parties made 360 controller clones, but the new PS4 controller dimensions look to be more inviting. Finally concave thumbsticks that are spaced further apart . . . and concave triggers!

EDIT: Although, I dunno, someone pointed out that the grips look kinda like penises (can't unsee). Oh well, I'll grab some schlongs for great games:

At least they seem to angle a bit more out now. Always felt like they were forcing my wrists into an unnatural position.

I honestly got so used to the DS3 and its predecessor that I unconsciously compensated for it, but yes I can see that complaint.

But WTH is with the two-tone matte trend in consoles? I mean the PS4 is a sexy, slanted beast, but come on, both it and the XBone look like they welded two different consoles together, redneck style:

Meh. How a console *looks* is the least of my concerns.

True. I can't really pass final judgement until I have both controllers in my hands and playing the games.

P.S. -- Pinkey Pie in close proximity to next gen consoles is a bit surreal.

You get used to her.

Or you pull a Lenas and block her.

I'm digging the PS4 UI. Haven't found the XBone UI for comparison:

Mah email this morning:

Amazon.com wrote:
Dear Amazon.com Customer,

Thank you for pre-ordering the PlayStation 4. Yesterday we made a change to the name of the product by adding "Launch" and "Standard" editions, which may have caused confusion for some of our customers.

We are writing to confirm that you ordered the "Launch Edition," which is Release-Day Delivery eligible. All other aspects of the two editions are identical.

You do not need to take any action or make any changes to your current order.

Neat!

Hmm. I think I'll stick with my original standalone order, as my launch title pick is going to be 'The Order 1866'. 'Knack' does look intriguingly adorable, though.

Saw the new PS commercial, it was pretty sweet.
