Here's what bugs me about it, I thought the Black Gate scene would have been great to show that there's still old magic in the world, that the Weirwoods actually do something. Instead we just got a fat wizard who read about a secret tunnel with a ladder that the Wildlings never even bothered to find in 7000 years.
