Well, 'Skee, if you liked that horrible movie 'Don't Be Afraid of the Dark', this one should make you **** your pants. It was a very tense movie, probably the best scary film I've seen in years. Vara Farmiga and Patrick Wilson steal the show, they're pretty great. I liked it better than Insidious.

I should note that the R rating isn't due to gore, nudity, or swearing. There's almost no gore, I don't remember if I heard any bad words and there are definitely no boobs [which might be a first for me in the horror genre].

I read somewhere that the MPAA pretty much said there was nothing that could be cut from the movie to give it a PG-13 rating.

I don't think being scary by itself should constitute an R rating, but the MPAA disagrees apparently.

Quote:
“When we sent it [to MPAA], they gave us the R-rating. When we asked them why, they basically said, ‘It’s just so scary. [There are] no specific scenes or tone you could take out to get it PG-13.’”

And the MPAA has the most bullshit ratings system and team. They don't publicize their standards. Their team does not represent an average viewing audience. They will let gruesome violence slide but if there is anything related to sex-type-things, watch out!

There's sometimes an agenda behind the ratings they give, and sometimes it's to gain power/control/money over the film. It wouldn't surprise me if that were the case here.

If you ever want to just rage really hard at the MPAA, watch "This film is not yet rated." The entire system is one big joke.

One of my favorite bits is from Trey Parker and Matt Stone, talking about trying to get "Orgazmo" rated (their first film). The MPAA basically said "we can't tell you what to cut to get an R-rating", and since they couldn't afford any more editing time/resubmissions, they just got hosed. Then, when making South Park: Bigger, Longer, and Uncut for a big budget, surprise, they sent over a huge LIST of things to edit. "Need to remove this word, need to change this scene, etc". They said they edited in more nudity and profanity and sent it back, and after doing that twice it got the R. Completely subjective, bullshit system.

So to not derail it too much, I was giving this film a complete pass, the ads on TV looked like the same old movie of the week jump scares, but after reading this thread I can't wait to see it and then sleep under the covers for a week.

I have heard great things about this one. Very excited.

And for anyone who thinks about/takes issues with MPAA ratings, I second a viewing of This Film is Not Yet Rated.

Yeah, I saw that movie a few years back. It only added weight to my already strong opinions. Good flick.

Critic on the radio gave Conjuring a 3.5 (out of 4 I believe). He said it was absolutely scary and that there was very little gore and the body count was low (and he also mentioned being baffled at the R rating). He said the film's scariness was more jump out scares and loads of tension.

It lived up to the hype, that's the best I can say.

*shudder*
