So late last night I finalized negotiations on my new promotion. I'll be the Director of Operations for the US at our corporate headquarters. It's a very nice promotion and decent bump in salary to boot, so from a career standpoint it's a great opportunity. We'll also be relocating from Minneapolis to the Chicago area, which is somewhat bittersweet. It will suck moving away from family and friends, but both my wife and I have felt like we've been in a bit of a rut as of late. Personally for both of us and professionally for her, so from that standpoint the timing and relocation will be good. We're looking forward to changing up a few things and having a new city to explore.

Currently we're in a mad dash to get our house ready for sale so that we can get some of the tail end of the selling season here before school starts. And holy **** do we have a lot of crap.

The new position goes into effect Aug. 1st but the full relocation won't happen until we sell our current house.

I used to not like Chicago, when I was a Wisconsinite. It was like the evil empire or something. Then I moved away, spent time on the East Coast, in NY, etc., and went to Chicago for a conference. Decided that it wasn't all bad, actually.

We'll actually be living in a northside suburb and not in Chicago proper. I don't think we'd enjoy living in the city itself, but having it close and accessable via the L is cool, as there is a ton of history, food and culture to be found there.

I'm outside of Dayton, actually. Not that we don't have our bad neighborhoods, either, though. Chicago's just been making news lately in regards to high gun crime rates despite oppressive gun controls.

A few years ago, I think Dayton was actually on some top twenty list or something for gun violence. DFK would know.

2004 plus years preceding and following Dayton was #4 on FBI's "most dangerous cities" list. I believe, last I saw, that we've fallen off.

There we go, that was it. But yeah, Dayton's cleaned itself up a fair amount in that regard.

Oh definitely. It should be noted that Dayton's MSA (metro area) never broke top 25, just the city itself.

Also, congrats Aizle. Which suburb?

Yet to be completely determined but we're strongly looking at Evanston. It's a bit too granola for me in some ways, but it's got a great downtown with tons of restaurants, bars and shops all within walking distance.

Elmo, which of the many facets of Chicago do you find the most annoying? High crime and murder rates? Heavy Democratc party control? Miserable winters? Elevated transit Areas? Not enough muppets? Ridiculous gun control laws? Brutal police record? Museum of Science and Industry? (Kidding, one of the main reasons to visit Chicago) Bears, Blackhawks and Cubs? Others . . .

Congrats on your new Job and relocation. I lived in Dayton for about 6 months back in the early 90's. It was certainly different.
