Apparently Microsoft is selling 32GB Surface RTs to education outlets for $200 ($250 with a keyboard case). Anyone have edu access and wanna pick one up for me? I'll PayPal you the monies :)

I wouldn't mind getting in on that either. The fact that it's limited to K-12 institutions really narrows the possibility of getting that hook-up. :(

Holy ****. MS lost $900 MILLION on the Surface.

In Q1 alone.

Seriously?

"RT is bullshit" ... how is a tablet-oriented OS which only allows installation of marketplace apps "bullshit"? Isn't that exactly how the iPad works?

"Pro is overpriced" ... Sure, $899 is a little bit steep, but a quick look at Dell's website says the cheapest I could get a laptop with an i5 processor and a touchscreen is $729. That means that with the Surface Pro, you're essentially paying an extra $170 to have that laptop squeezed into a tablet.

I'm not really understanding the massive levels of hate some people have for the Surface. Particularly since it's a totally optional piece of hardware. If you don't like it, don't buy it - but why hate it? Has it personally done you wrong in some way?

I have a mild amount of dislike for RT. It created a partition between Windows 8 users. Most apps run on RT, but it is still a different platform developers have to account for. Additionally, you can't run desktop apps without hacking the device.

The current gen Windows 8 tablets with Atom processors don't have to deal with any of that bullcrap, they have a similar (if not lower) price point, still perform great (excluding my Asus, which is on its second RMA for bad hardware), and they can run most desktop apps excluding recent 3D accelerated games.

That I can see, RT only offers disadvantages to the consumer. So when LPenas says RT is BS, I will agree. Circle gets the square.

Apple did not claim that iOS was going to be a universal operating system for all of their products. Customers were not being sold a One True Platform. Microsoft did exactly that with Windows 8, which is where the hate for the RT is coming from.

Shel, I have been one of the Surface's champions since it was announced. I love the hardware, but there's no denying that Microsoft is missing the mark here. I have an 11.6" Samsung 500T that I got for $399, which at the time was the same price as a Surface RT, and it runs full Windows 8 without issue. Not to mention it comes with a Wacom stylus just like the Surface Pro. It gets somewhere around 10 hours of use on a single charge which really makes me wonder what all the fuss about ARM was about in the first place.

Windows RT has done nothing but fragment a market and leave a bunch of people with a bad impression of the platform.

I actually don't think the Pro is that overpriced, but bundling a keyboard with it for free would have been a much smarter idea. I'm still planning on purchasing one for myself, but I want to see if they'll update it with the Haswell line before I do.

I'm not going to defend surface either. Sooo many mistakes.

But the 900 million dollar write off is on unsold product. They can still recover some of this if they can fix some of the flaws.

The company still made nearly $20 billion in Q2. 10% up from the same quarter in the previous year.

OK, some things I wasn't aware of. Thanks for the feedback.

Still not in any way displeased with my Surface RT, but can now better understand why others are.
