Couple of reviews have pointed this out and I agree / appreciate the point:

The trailers basically only show you clips from early scenes in the movie. It almost feels like the movie itself is the sequel to the trailers :P I haven't seen a single trailer or preview clip that has showed any of the ending sequences and that's awesome.

That is a really good point.

I just got back from seeing this, and despite having seen all of the trailers and promo's, there was still quite a bit of meat left on that bone...

This movie is so awesome that I will go see it again in the theaters. Which I haven't done in over 15 years. This movie fully delivers.

Spoiler:
Ron Perlman was awesome.

I will likely see it again in the theater as well. Will also be buying the 3D blu-ray.

Stick around a minute for a scene mid-credits. It's like 10 seconds long and not important, but it's there.

My biggest disappointment:
Spoiler:
The Chinese jaeger with all of the buzz-saw hands, didn't cut off ANYTHING! I wanted to see a Kaiju head go flying off, but noooo.

I had a good laugh at the mid credits scene. Certainly worth waiting through the awesome credit sequence alone. But the scene was icing on the cake.

edit:

I want more movies to do that, instead of putting the **** at the very end of the credits. 9 times out of 10 it isn't even worth waiting through(the last Marvel after credits scene worth waiting for was at the end of the original Iron Man).

Iron Man 3 would have been better if it never got made.

Finally had a free weekend, went and saw this. The movie definitely delivered what I was expecting, and that was giant robots punching giant monsters. My biggest let-down was that there wasn't more of this (my wife vocally expressed the same desire at the end of the movie).

I think the only other thing that didn't sit well with me was

Spoiler:
I was expecting some sort of tragedy to go along with the heroism. Whether that was going to be in the form of Charlie Day going nutzo from drifting with a kaiju and sabotaging things (or, even cooler, him directly controlling or becoming a kaiju). Or, the fact that Jax actually survived the sacrifice of the Jaeger I saw coming since Act 1 ("We are going to nuclearly explode this hole. Oh, and BTW, your Jaeger has two nuclear reactors in it. Just FYI. No need to connect dots here. Move along.").

The ending just felt less climactic I guess. I was expecting a bigger ending to this big movie.

Ah well. Overall I liked it. It's too bad the rest of the world didn't since it hasn't done too well at the box office (for point of reference, Grown Ups 2 had a better weekend).

On the contrary, the world does like it and only us Americans are dumb enough to let Grown Ups 2 gross more.

Oh good. I'm glad to know there are smarter people out there than us.

And it hasn't opened in Japan yet? Wow. They must be chomping at the bit for this one (at least the dude from Sony seemed to be). I have to admit when I saw Mako I immediately thought: pandering.

TL;DR version: Pacific Rim opened to a groundbreaking $9m opening day in China, "a new high for any Warner Bros release and 23% bigger than for any Harry Potter film including 3D Harry Potter 7B." It appears that given the international reception, a sequel is now deemed "likely."

****. YES.

While I am glad the movie did well(awesome, incredible movie) I don't see a need for a sequel. I'd still go see it, but...well, things were wrapped up fairly well there at the end.

I'd go see that.

A few things Guillermo del Toro has mentioned he's planned for the sequel:

The return of Gipsy Danger
An exploration of the ramifications of drifting with a kaiju
A kaiju/jaeger hybrid

“I think where we would go [in a sequel] is insane. It would make this look like Howard’s End." - GdT

Raltar, are you kidding me?? Kaiju / Jaeger hybrids going through the portal to fight the unnamed aliens on their home turf would be, like... I don't even know, the blood just rushed out of my brain.
