The Glade 4.0

OK, so hoping someone might have an inkling of a good card I can use for this.

My work computer is an Optiplex GX520- no frills, but a solid work computer. I'm running the 92945G Express integrated graphics controller, and have no complaints on performance, for what I do.

But I would like to hook up a second monitor, which will require adding a PCI card. The chipset supports dual monitors, and had dual display adapters, just a single port.

So I need a low-power video card to work as a secondary display adapter for my second monitor, which will be landscape primarily to display PDFs of papers as I'm working through them.

So this is looking like my best bet.

Cheap, simple, and fits PCI slots.

Now here's the question. It seems like the chipset I have supports using dual display adapters- one from the integrated, and one from the PCI expansion card. Am I understanding that correctly?

So instead of installing this and disabling the onboard, I simply install the new card, and use it to drive the second monitor as a secondary?

Or I suppose it would make more sense to go into the BIOS and make the PCI card primary and integrated secondary?

It looks to me like that graphics card can support two monitors on its own, one using the VGA port and the other DVI. I would just run them both off the card. But I think what you're trying to do with running one off the GPU and the other off integrated should also work in theory.

Most of the Dell mobos I'm familiar with "shut down" the intel graphics when an external card is plugged in. I can't precisely say on that model. You might want to do some research.

The support article I found on the chipset from intel seems to indicate that it's meant to work with both the integrated and PCI cards, but I'm not quite sure.

I'm going to try to find a scrapped computer somewhere on campus, pull out an old PCI card, and give it a shot.
