Wow. First day tallies are up.

1.29m points for demomen
1.39m points for soldiers

That's staggering.

The tally is 4.441million to 4.667 million, with the soldiers holding a close lead.

But the Fighting Scotsman's headline yesterday reads "Beginner's Luck About to Run Out."

Read about Demoman's homelife, and the morning Miss Pauling comes to offer him a host of weapons, including the Eyelander and Chargin' Targe...

The shield sounds cool but no way folks give up the stick mines...no way.

I dunno. Guaranteed crits, especially if the sword has a longish reach for a melee weapon? Also, we're talking not insignificant speed boosts...

Throw on top of that, the blast and fire protection, and I'd probably be pretty happy to give up stickies playing offense.

It's probably going to get a reputation early on -- if you're good, it will excel, because good people can aim their grenade launcher. Using the Chargin' Targe to close range or get through a heavily blasted choke point quickly, or *chase down scouts* with your grenade launcher? These are scary notions.

Well, lets see how the damage reduction deals with a level three sentry. As an engi I can deal with spy's all day long. I have no answer for a demoman and his damn sticky mines.

Shotgun or pistol. Shoot them up as he's loading you down. That will either whittle his multi-sticky bang down to a non-lethal level for you and the gun, or it'll force him to detonate them one at a time, which you can out-repair.

Also: New update is up. Soldier gets the Direct Hit, Valve announces a free weekend starting Thursday, Valve unveils some more Merch, and the soldier gets his comic appearance.

I was thinking; are we lucky enough to be due for Meet the Medic or Meet the Pyro? Or, heaven help us, Meet the Announcer?

Also, be sure you get a chance to log in sometime before the event finishes, if you haven't (I'm looking at you, Foamy) to play a round or two; the Announcer has a lot of great new lines for round prep times.

Looking toward the 10-day break upcoming for the holidays to maybe try and catch up a little.

I barely get a chance to turn on the computer at home anymore. I haven't read a lick about these updates since everything game-related is blocked here at work.

Anyone care to post a summary of the upcoming update(s) for me. I would greatly appreciate it.

They're doing what looks like a dual soldier/demoman update (though it briefly looked like it was going to be *either* a demoman or soldier update, depending on the outcome of the contest), with an extra item unlock awarded to the class that wins the war.

The war is scored by, playing as one of the two involved classes, killing members of the other class. They're keeping a running tally, with daily updates. Soldier has maintained a 125k-200k point lead pretty consistently, total scores were up around 5 million last update.

The update has come with some fun comics each day. The first day, highlights (and officially introduces!) the Announcer (dubbed the Administrator), and reveals that she is, indeed, the same person running both teams and pitting them against each other. Her assistant (would that be an Administrative Assistant? I kill me) brings it to her attention that recent routine background checks on the mercenaries has revealed that Blue Soldier and Red Demoman have become friends outside of work. The Administrator is outraged at this conflict of interest and betrayal of her trust, and resolves to pit them against each other as punishment. Each are approached with offers of new probably illegal arms (rescued from Mann, Co., which was about to destroy them in order to cover up evidence!) in exchange for killing the other.

So far, the weapons that have been revealed are the melee kit for Demoman; consisting of the Eyelander, a Claymore to replace his bottle. It is haunted and "slow-forged for centuries in the bowels of English kings," and thus its cursed nature lowers maximum health when equipped, but will guarantee a decapitation with every killing blow. Each killing blow will also provide a boost in max health and speed. The Eyelander doesn't get normal crits, but does benefit from charging crits (see next).
The second part of the melee kit is the Chargin' Targe, which solves an ancient Scottish riddle: that shields exist. It provides some mitigation for forcing the classic Scotsman to put down his second sword, and otherwise unconscionable act, because it can handily be used to charge at people and bludgeon them to death. The Chargin' Targe replaces the Sticky Launcher, and offers an alt-fire that launches you into a hurtling charge towards your foes. Melee strikes launched in the middle of a medium-length charge will get an automatic mini-crit, and strikes made from a long-distance charge will get a full crit. The Targe also offers 65% resistance to blast damage, and 50% (I think, not double checking the numbers) resistance to fire damage.

The soldier's revealed weaponry thus far is the Direct Hit, a rocket launcher which offers a 70% reduced splash radius in exchange for a projectile that's 80% faster and 25% more damaging, and guarantees mini-crits on airborne targets.

Finally, they've announced a crafting system that will allow you to make items you haven't discovered or unlocked yet from spares in your inventory, as well as teased us with the possibility to create *new* items that we haven't seen yet.

And I think that about covers it. Oh, free weekend this weekend, starting Thursday night.

This was just the update download server. Once you get the update, no problems.

He got in, eventually, btw. I was gonna follow him, but by the time I downloaded the update, he'd moved onto a surf server, which didn't hold my interest. =)

He loves those damn surf servers. He puts his music on and just takes off. 95% of the time we play on that Orange server.

The new rocket launcher is fairly ridiculous, IMHO. It lets you do things that are impossible with the standard rocket launcher. The two biggest ones are you can kill a level 3 sentry with an engy banging on it by emptying a clip of 4 rockets into it, this doesn't work with the standard rocket launcher. You can also kill a heavy with a medic healing him by just rocketing him 4 times, no need to shoot the medic. Both targets are obviously really easy to hit.

New rocket launcher isn't bad.

No, what is completely overpowered is the new sword and shield. The demomen using these are extremely hard to kill (as in, insane amount of damage taken before they die), they move faster than scouts, and kill most people in just one shot. Combine that with flag runs and it puts any and all scouts to shame.

It is not uncommon to see a demoman have 8 dominations in one game.

And people complained when the backburner added +50 health. Wow.

Both sets are ripe for a nerf. I shot a demo, point blank four times with the normal rocket launcher today...then cried as he started to cut me up.

Just found the eyelander and chargin targe. Wow. Just playing around on a training map with bots just to see how much health one could get with that sword, I got so much health that it wrapped around back to 0 and began counting again. It was well over 500 hitpoints (more than a medic-buffed heavy!... and it's more than a fully charged sniper rifle's headshot can dish out!). Combine that with the targe's 65% resistance to explosive and fire damage.

And again.... people complained about the backburner giving the pyro just an extra 50 health? My God.

I have no idea if a medic's 50% health increase can be stacked on top of that. It would not surprise me if it could.

Um, if it's wrapping, I bet it can't.

Health is probably stored as a 9 bit number, which would wrap at 511, based on what you just said.

And the extra 50 health was ridiculous because it doesn't require *killing people* at melee to get, and you get it out of the gate instead of starting *lower* on health and thus at a disadvantage to get that melee kill in the first place.

Furthermore, the backlash against the 50 health backburner was that in addition, it *also* got guaranteed crits (making it flat-out better than the flamethrower), and because of where it automatically puts the pyro in the health scale -- above a *soldier*? That's where the imbalance was coming from.
