So, we're all good with George Lucas's changes, then?

From a class role discussion on Reddit:

Redditor wrote:
I'm going to take a leap here and assume that most of you are familiar with League of Legends or some other MOBA (DoTA, Smite, HoN, etc).
I've seen article after article out there picking away at what was said during the class panel and trying to guess how the AI (as smart or as dumb as it is to be tuned) will make up for the lack of a dedicated tank, healer, dps, (crown control) combination. And, the first thing that keeps jumping to my mind is the MOBA genre and how fights work within it.

You still have tanks. You still have supports. You still have dedicated DPS. However, the AI (or other opponents) know enough to not just run face first into the "tanks". But, part of the kit of a good tank (or bruiser) is their disruption ability. Now, the AI has to think about whether it's a better decision to damage the person they can reach, or to take a lot more damage (and risk dying) before getting to a more desirable target.

Now, let's take this one step further and quit saying the word "tank" and saying the word "melee". And instead of healer let's say "support". Now, we have the same group, but the AI has to decide between a melee who can do decent amounts of damage, but is in their face, or a ranged who can do higher damage, but requires gap closing. Or chase the support who can constantly kite them while the melee and ranged are doing damage.

This is what I imagine the "destruction" of the holy trinity to be while still maintaining player roles. I think it's just a progression of AI - sure, some creatures may be stupid enough to just attack the first thing they see, but if you were fighting human-equivalent thinking NPCs, you would expect them to be smart enough to assess threat and invalidate the idea of a true tank. And, without a true tank, I don't think you're going to see the idea of a true healer. Support skills that limit mobility, etc will become much more important when there is no longer one damage sponge to be clicked on.

Dave Georgeson wrote:
Nailed it! You are on exactly the right path here. Now start to consider the potential of how the AI can interact that way and what it does for group dynamics and you'll start seeing why we think this is going to be a BLAST.
(Not that we're a MOBA, of course. Just being clear. ;)

Redditor wrote:
The problem is that people (myself included) are skeptical of this, because we (I) haven't seen AI similar to this in an MMO before. If it works out, that's great, a lot of us just need to see it in action to believe it.

Dave Georgeson wrote:
That seems like a perfectly reasonable response. Why shouldn't you doubt? It's up to us to prove. Workin' on it!

New lore e-book released, "The Fall of Bastion"

https://www.everquestnext.com/downloads ... astion.pdf

Edit - it's actually pretty dark. Last 2 chapters are pretty good.

Edit 2 - ebook spoiler discussion post on why Innoruuk may actually be in EQN and you all may be preemptively mad about god changes for nothing:

Spoiler:
Quote:
I decided to make this as a place for people to discuss the first ebook for EverQuest Next "The Last Stand of the Teir'Dal" by Maxwell Alexander Drake

From my understanding at this point in time there are no separate races of elves and are only made of the factions as explained in the lore panel video.

Based on the above I think people can come to the conclusion that after reading the short story that this is a prelude to the creation of the Dark Elven Teir'Dal we all know.

First sign to me was the appearance of Lanys T'Vyl. For those of you unfamiliar with Lanys T'Vyl, in the original EverQuest she was known as the Daughter of Hate and potential Avatar for the Prince of Hatre, the god Innoruuk.

The second sign was the unearthly draw that brought Keramore to the wizard spires buried beneath the city surrounded by oddly shaped humanoid figures. My assumption is these statues represent or are replicas of Innoruuk.

Finally my third clue was where they ended up once passed the portal. They were in a strange land covered in black sand and a black starless sky. This description resembles one you can find for the Plane of Hate in the original EverQuest. Though instead of black sand is appeared to be a cursed village but still had a black starless sky.

I honestly look forward to a continuation of this story to see what becomes of meek weary Teir'Dal forces and to see if they turn on the Combine (possibly enlisting Ogres, Iksar, and Trolls to their side.)

Edit: This has also lead me to believe that the gods mentioned in the lore panel may not be all of them but only the ones that the Combine worship/know of.

Innoruuk and Cazic Thule could still be very real but have chosen not to have shown themselves to the races of Norrath yet.

The only thing that bugs me about that picture is the nose. It's too Na'vi flat. Everything else I think is a great artistic license.

So EQnext doesn't take place on Norrath, but whatever planet Avatar took place on? Interesting.

I've watched the bulk of the EQ Next presentations, and am intrigued by a lot of what they are doing...

The artistic style however is a big turnoff for me.

I realize I am probably not their target audience (at least I hope I'm not). I would much prefer something similar to the original EQ styling, but with modern details and technology.

Pretty much sums it up for me, too, in 3 easy lines. It was between this and TESO, so that makes that decision. It's kind of too bad; I miss Norrath of 1999-2003 or so. I don't know that it can ever be recaptured though.

I actually really like the art and styling I've seen so far. And the concepts they are throwing around are intriguing. I am however. More cautious as I said the same things about GW2 and that hasn't been quite as awesome as I hoped.

By original Norrath, you mean top-heavy chicks in chainmail bikinis, assless chaps, and swimsuits?

That was nice and all, but not exactly what I meant.

Are we doing the whole, "Let's show the female gamers we're sensitive and enlightened," thing that's been going around the industry lately? I mean, I'm all for having women who look like this:

Spoiler:

I think it adds a lot to a game, personally, but if everyone's running around parroting lines from Womyn's Studies 101, I'd rather see busty wenches in bikini chainmail just so you all feel offended.

nice...

I just prefer a more natural/realistic look to the cartoony oversized/exaggerated style they are using.

The problem with realistic is that it quickly looks dated, whereas a stylized graphic direction is much closer to timeless.

Some truth in that, but stylized could be done by WoW in 2004 and it doesn't look much better now.

The solution to those of us who want a hard game set in a fantasy world with EQ like mechanics is obvious:

We build our own.

Yes and I very much expect that to be the case after Landmark has had some time to grow as a platform. SOE has already hinted that players will be able to script AI and events at some point.
