Is this child praying to the President?

I respect the child's right to freedom of religion and all. However, If I were the President (and even if i wasn't and found out something was praying to me.), I would not want to encourage this behavior.

Well the video is titled a prayer FOR President... and the kid clearly states 'for' in the beginning of the video, and mentions God during... so...

I'm just going to guess that the kid has grammar issues or was slightly nervous recording a video. Obviously he doesn't understand what the **** he's talking about in any case, which is okay, he's just a kid.

Let's assume he is actually praying to Obama.

What do you mean by saying if you were the President, you wouldn't encourage this behavior? Did Obama do something to tell the kid to pray to him? Do you think Obama should hold a press conference asking people not to pray to him? Would you have run your campaign by saying, "Don't pray to me, pray for me."?

Our President seems to have no problems interjecting himself into minor situations, even when they have little to do with him. So he could say something about it, publicly in passing, if he were so inclined.

If I was President, I would probably privately contact the youtube channel owner and ask for information to write the lad, thanking him for his concern and that yes he should probably pray for me and not to me. Also I would have done my best to quash some of this messiah stuff as well and make it known that I don't want Rodeo clowns banned for life because they make fun of me. I'm a big boy; I can take it.

See, naming your kid "Jesus," I get. It's common to name our kids after religious role models' names. We've got Peters, Pauls, Marys, Jacobs, Davids, Rebekahs, and on and on. So Jesus makes sense.

But Messiah isn't a name, people. It's a title. Blaspheming aside, naming your kid "King" is also retarded.

Oh you mean like Smith, (a metal worker) Cooper, (Barrel maker) Wright (woodworker)

Or did you mean like: Tyrone (king)
Parson (minister)
Emanuel (God is with Us; Messiah)

Smith, Cooper, and Wright are typically last names, not first names.

Interesting question brought about by the initial post in the thread.

Suppose the child was praying to Obama. Furthermore, suppose there was a genuine Obama cult. I don't mean the Obama cult that conservatives accuse liberals of promoting, I mean an actual, tangible cult with all the trappings like holy books, hymns, holidays, and the works.

Would this prohibit Obama from holding the office of president?

This is not the same as asking whether a minister can hold office. Can the actual godhead of a religion hold public office?

They have in the past.

The two don't appear to be mutual exclusive. To me prohibiting a pastor, rabbi, imam, yogi, etc from holding office would be "prohibiting the free exceed use thereof" however the freedom from religion foundation and your local Scotus might disagree.

Mike Huckabee is a former pastor and no one challenged his Presidential bid on such grounds.

However not knowing any actual god heads alive during American times that's the closest I can come.

If the godhead is a natural born citizen at least 35 years old, then yes. No religious test may be used as a qualification for public office.

It would probably depend on the specifics.

Suppose that at some point in the future, a natural born American became pope. It will never happen, but let's just pretend it did. Would that person be eligible for the office of PotUS? Probably not unless they quit the papacy. From Article I, Section 9:

Quote:
No Title of Nobility shall be granted by the United States: And no Person holding any Office of Profit or Trust under them, shall, without the Consent of the Congress, accept of any present, Emolument, Office, or Title, of any kind whatever, from any King, Prince, or foreign State.

Of course, the pope isn't a godhead, but you get the point.

Even then, it's not entirely clear. Is an office of the Roman Catholic Church strictly speaking an office of the state of the Vatacan? What exactly constitutes a "foreign State"? Could the President of the U.S. simultaneously be an officer of the U.N., for instance?

Yes, the Pope is the Head of State of the Vatican. In fact, accepting the papcy would probably constitute renunciation of citizenship.

Pope

Quote:
The pope is also head of state of Vatican City a sovereign city-state entirely enclaved within the city of Rome.

The U.N. is a little stickier; it isn't a foreign state and clearly is not a King or Prince. It was not envisioned when that passage was written.

I'm sure if we had an American Pope Elect, congress would likely give their consent.

There are plenty of Hispanic kids named "Rey" which is Spanish for King.
