Jarl Valgard Stonecleaver, an old friend, has written a book. Even more amazing, it is being published and is now available for pre-order on Amazon.

Some of you may know him, he's a New York kind of guy these years.

Medieval Fantasy as Performance: The Society for Creative Anachronism and the Current Middle Ages - Michael Cramer (author)

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/de ... R&v=glance

I'll probably pick up a copy, even if it is $40 for a paperback.

You in particular Monte, would probably get something from this. Valgard has been a performer all of the 30ish years I've known him. I'm looking forward to reading his take on things.

Funny, the helmet on the guy on the cover of the book has what I would call an Ancient fantasy helmet, rather than a Medieval!

But, I think I've read this somewhere. It seems very familiar. I'd swear it was at Barnes and Noble or something. Huh, you sure it's not out? Is Amazon sure?

Actually,that's a pretty good helm.

I shall have to pick the book up. A friend of mine has a PHD in folklore, and is working on a book right now about the SCA's oral history. I was a pretty big part of her dissertation (I do bardic fairly prolifically).

There is a cool documentary called Darkon about SCA type stuff. IFC plays it every now and then.

Huh, I dunno, doesn't it strike you as more Ancient Corinthian or something, though, than a nice helm with a nasal? Or are you thinking a Renaissance rendition of an Ancient style that I could see. But, yeah, it's certainly pretty.

And, now I remember - I saw this book online. I think it was Amazon, in fact, and they had a good chunk of the book available for previewing. They must have taken it down.

Some folks do really, really really early period. Technically, there's no official early "line". I mean, you aren't likely to see a cave man, but there are plenty of picts, romans, etc.

True, true, OK. Guess we're stuck with the guys from Sparta, then. :)

You've never met the Tuchuks?

More from Gor than Earth, but very Spartan in their choice of armor.

Ah, yes, Tuchuks. I've heard tales, never actually encountered them. Or, maybe I did and just didn't know it. Same with the Horde. One of our most active members was part of it, never really let on.

I have friends who have been horde for over 30 years, though not active as such. On the West Coast it seems to have died out.

Tuchuks I have never met, just heard stories and seen pictures.

I camp next door to the Great Dark Horde at Pennsic. Awesome people. I'm allowed to use the VIP entrance. (Laurel Queen of Arms is in the Horde. She likes me.)

For the most part the Tuchuks are wonderful people. Like every large group of people, they have a few assholes, but most of them are incredible. The kindness and generosity of their water bearers to non-tuchuks is also wonderful to see.

I only know one of them personally, but he's one of the finest people I've ever met in the SCA. If he were not apart of the Tuchuks I would not bat an eye that he would be knighted. His name is Animal Weretiger. If ever you run across the fellow, you won't regret being within his aura of warmth, generosity & love of the SCA.

As some one who knew about the Gor novels and the various RP venues for it before the SCA, I got quite a kick seeing them as a fringe group when I did get involved in the SCA.

I know Animal from online at the Armored Archive. Nice guy. Never met him in person. The Tuchux have grown up a lot over the years. They still have bizarro gor the barbarian social niceties going on, but most of it's just schtick these days.
